I also could not understand the Lamy craze, thought it was rather ugly and resisted the Lamy Safari wagon, but got sucked in when I was presented with a great deal:

to get every nib size and a Safari for $80CDN. It really is a great way to test out nib sizes and see which one you love most, while ending up with a functional and decent pen.

I am no fan of the triangular grip though. I have a strange grip to begin with (the pen rests on my first knuckle between my ring finger & 2nd finger) so I'm finding that the biggest challenge - but for all round intro into the world of fountain pens it's great starter pen. It actually helped me appreciate my Pilot Metropolitan F nib so much more! (LOL)

The colours are like candy...once you have one you want them all...there's this strange compulsion...not like I would have them all inked up at once nor that I can't change the nib on the one I have in a matter of seconds...they're just pretty colours....we're all magpies sucked in by flashy pretty colourful things

To think one can write Truth is but an illusion of words. Now BEAUTY! That's a poem of words & forms!

Does anyone know the actual model number of the Petrol? All I found is 024, but that would be the number of the AL-Star silvergreen from around 2008.

Amazing the number of posts saying the poster doesn't like the pen. Trying to discourage other users from competing with you for the pen? Trying to warn others off? Not just the Safari either. Amusing.

I think this is a good colour, but I have to say I've found Lamy's recent efforts to be lacklustre...the Lx is a complete fizzer to me. Rebadging an Al-star and jacking up the price by 50% for a fancy case, and still not including a converter...I expected better.

I'm rather indifferent to the Imporium as well...it's a decent looking pen but doesn't really do much for me personally, at least for the price (US$450 here in Australia)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
