Smaragdgrun - Rohrer & Klingner

Rohrer & Klingner operates since 1892. At the moment it's the fifth generation of the family that manages the company. I guess that after 122 years they know what they are doing.

R&K inks offer amazing quality for amazing price. In my country a bnottle of R&K ink costs 5-6 $. I know it's a bit more expensive in America, yet I believe the price is still reasonable.

I find it interesting that Rohrer & Klingner seems to focus mainly on the content and not on the bottles. Inks come in industrial looking bottle taht is quite handy but there's just nothing fancy about it. It's surprising.

Rohrer and Klingner Smaragdgrun is my least favorite R&K ink. I hate this color range. Viscerally.

The saturation, shading, and flow are all pretty average. The water resistance is practically non existent. The ink dries pretty fast. It has good shading potential and in wet pen and on right paper it produces kind of black-red sheen.

This color is most regrettable.

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

Nice review. This is one of my favorites. It is really nice in a wet stub nib.

This ink has my attention. I really like blue/greens, as well as shading and sheening. The way this ink shades from a light blue to a medium bluish green strikes my fancy. And a black-red sheen, you say? Hm...

Another great review and another green that I will not feel the need to purchase.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Thanks for the review. Not a color for me  -- but knowing what *not* to buy is as useful (and possibly more so) than seeing reviews of inks I end up wanting....

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

  • 3 years later...

Seems like a marmite colour this. I'm liking it though. A fresh green/turquoise/teal. Reminds me of the feel of Robert Oster Tranquillity, although that is ofc a greener hue.

Apart from fact that color is too light and bland for my liking, I personally have started to hold some doubt with ink fade in R&K inks of this line after getting burnt by sallix showing considerable fading despite being IG. Sadly its one of my favourite behaving ink which I can't use due to fear of seeing my notes getting shades lighter as months go by....

Anyway nice review, thanks for sharing.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
