Update On My Visconti Ragtime Id Question (Can't Post In Original Thread)

Update.

I was in Kingdom Note today where I bought the pen in question and asked if they had any more information on it. They graciously did some digging and emailed the following to me. I included all the info they sent as I thought it would be a nice addition to body of information on these pens. The English translation comes from a translation website.

お手元にお持ちのお品物のように、天冠と尻軸が丸みを帯びていて、

キャップリングがテーパーかかった一重リングは、カトウセイサクショが制作に関わったとされる初期型でございます。

Like the items you have at hand, the crown and bottom axes are rounded,

The single ring with the cap ring tapered, It is the earliest type that Kato Sei shakusho is involved in production.

また、1994年以降、キャップリングは二重になり、天冠と尻軸はフラットになります。

※このタイプIIを元に制作されたのが2008年設立20周年記念モデル

Also, since 1994, the cap ring becomes double, the crown and the bottom axis become flat.

※ This type II was created based on the 20th anniversary model established in 2008

初期型、タイプIIは素材が双方セルロイド、復刻版はアクリル樹脂となっております。

Initial type, type II are both celluloid materials, The reprint version is acrylic resin.

Hi Tinjapan...

This is my Ragtime. I've always understood it to be a Mk I.

It's one of my favourite pens. :D

Mine looks like yours except that my nib is all gold toned. It has an 18 k nib. Yours also has an 18 k nib?

Thanks.

The nib isn't marked with 14K or 18k. Just VISCONTI FIRENZE.

I think that there are a number of nib variations.

That's seems to be the case, including glass nibs. One blogger suggests that the differing clips might have been matched to different nibs.

From what I gather, there were a couple of different clips, (early ball-ended and later 'S'), various nibs, and two variations of cap band...but always the domed cap.

The Mark II. S clip, both variations of band, various nibs, but a flat top.

Mine is a piston filler, but was there a CC version as well? I think so.

Seems that there were a lot of short runs.

Your info seems to match mine except that I have not yet run across any mention of any of the MK 1s being c/c filled. Doesn't that there weren't, just that I hadn't found that info yet.

Actually, could be with in the body of info I collected but that info not refering to my pen, I just skipped over it.

Have you ever found an exploded view of one of these pens? I just got a second one in wood that I am having trouble with. I am not wanting to take apart my celluloid as it is inked and working just fine.

Congratulations on the wood version. Any chance of photos?

No, I haven't come across an exploded view...yet, but will give you a shout if I do.

I've seen that you would like to fix the pen yourself, but is it worth sending to a professional repairer?

Might have to get it professionally repaired, given the dearth of info on how to fix these pens.

That really is nice. Well worth a few more dollars to get it up and running.

Thanks for the picture.

The clip is definately different but I am now of the belief that both are of the first edition, yours either being earlier than mine or with a different nib.

Yours is also a lovely pen.

BTW, I have another that leaks out the rear seal. Any info on how to repair it would be helpful.

I very well remember when I bought it, and the clip have been only that one.

That was the clip of the first serie.

A different clip is a different serie.

The little I have found on these pens suggests that different clips were used on the first adition of the Ragtime. Two people I know have said they thought it would be a later pen of this first series.

Mine is certainly not a type II as those are flat tops, nor is it a later version as it is celluloid and piston filled.

  • 2 months later...

Dos anyone know how to safely remove the section on these pens? The section of the wooden Ragtime I have unscews easily. The sections of my celluloid Ragtimes (I now have 2) do not want to budge.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
