April Big Apple Pen Club Meeting

Dear Friends...

It's the first week of April...so the next meeting of New York City's only active pen club will be next Thursday, April 13, 7-9 pm. We'll meet at our usual forgiving spot, Bard Hall, just west of Midtown in Manhattan (directions at end of this post). Whether you're coming for business or pleasure, or want to schedule business or pleasure around our meeting, please join us!

This time, we'll have a special agenda item. BAPC member John Segal, the Creative Director of Crane Stationery, needs to have a variety of Crane stationery papers beta-tested for use with fountain pens, and has appointed the April meeting attendees as his beta testers with whatever super-wide range of pens and ink we happen to bring. In addition, he'll fill us in on the state of the stationery industry. Should be interesting and fun!

As always, bring your pens -- especially your spoils from the LI Pen Show -- there will be plenty of time for us to create the usual bedlam. There is no need to RSVP, just show up and bring your pens. Feel free to bring any kind of food and/or drink with you.

Looking forward to seeing you next Thursday! Reach out to me via PM or at bapcemail@gmail.com with any questions, or to be added to our email list.

best,

Tim

Directions:

Bard Hall, the residential building for Bard Graduate Center, is located at 410 West 58th Street in Manhattan, just west of 9th Avenue/Columbus Avenue. The best way to get there from almost anywhere in NYC is via subway -- take the 1/A/C/B/D trains to 59th Street/Columbus Circle (note: 2/3 trains do not stop at 59th, even though it is a major intersection). Depending on which subway exit stair you use, put Central Park behind you and walk around the southern (left) side of the Time Warner complex, which is 58th Street. Walk west on 58th (against traffic); 9th Avenue/Columbus is the next intersection west. Bard Hall is diagonally across the intersection and three addresses downhill on 58th at 410, immediately past the small construction site. Please tell the guard you are there for the Pen Club -- you will be expected and directed to the proper room.

We will also be raffling off several Joey Feldman Aurora prints that were at the LA Pen Show, which will include special illustrations on the bottom for BAPC.

Tim, I'd be happy to hand over a few pens to Josh and pick them up next month. It's handy to have a nib craftsman in Big Apple Pen Club!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
