Conklin Nozacs

Were there not exceptions, such as my lever-fill, faceted Penline model (posted above)?

And have you come across any evidence (e.g. from adverts/catalogues) that tells against the idea that the lever filler pens (particularly the faceted models) were Nozacs? Mine bears an imprint sans 'Nozac', but it's identical to the imprint on my V-line piston-filler Nozac.

Note my post says: This was actually a regular production model and not called a Nozac.

Conklin called these pens "Penline sac type" fountain pens.

As to faceted, nothing surprises me. The catalog I have shows Penline lever fill pens as rounded. No faceted models.

Thanks!

Hi, Folks!

This is a large size Conklin Nozac Penline Red faceted piston fill fountain pen c. 1937. Conklin announced four new Penline colors in 1937, including Grey, Red, Green and Golden based on a 1935 patented brickwork and stripes design celluloid. The Nozac Penline was introduced in 1936 and was offered in rounded and faceted versions. Nozac pens use a piston filling system Conklin introduced in 1931. The pen fills by twisting the end cap while the nib is in ink. The ink level could be seen in the translucent front end of the barrel. These 5 3/16 inch long pens used the 1936 patented clip and had 14 karat gold nibs stamped CONKLIN over CUSHON over POINT over 14KT over U.S.A. At the top of the nib is the Conklin Crescent logo. Large size Nozac Penline pens like this one sold for $7.50 and the matching pencil was $3.50.

Here's my only Nozac, which I just got. I haven't really cleaned it up or gotten it working yet, but I took a quick shot of it for this thread.

Hi, Folks!

This is a Conklin Penline Sac Pen in Red c. 1937. Though not a Nozac, this 4 7/16 inch long pen looks similar, having a 12 sided facted cap and barrel and made in the same Grey, Red, Green and Golden celluloid. It was also made in Black. It's a typical lever fill pen. The barrel is stamped THE CONKLIN PEN CO. over TOLEDO OHIO U.S.A. over REG. U.S. PAT. OFF. The 14 karat gold nib is stamped CONKLIN over CUSHON over POINT over 14KT over U.S.A. At the top of the nib is the Conklin Crescent logo. Penline Sac Pens like this one sold for $5.00 and the matching pencil was $3.50.

Hi, Folks,

This is a Conklin Nozac 5000 word Chevron design in Green Pearl celluloid c. 1936. Conklin introduced two new lines, Chevron and Penline in September 1936. Each is constructed of tubes made from sheet celluloid with repeating striped patterns. Chevron pens have translucent strips separated with strips of alternating direction rows of colored celluloid arrows. The sheets were wrapped into cap and barrel tubes that were then worked into finished caps and barrels. The seam can be found with careful examination. Look for the white line near the base of the cap. This tube construction method allowed the barrel to be a single piece with the translucent strips in the top half for viewing the ink level. You can see the Word Gauge on the top left of the barrel and the imprint further down. The bottom half hides the piston mechanism. The Chevron came in three colors: red and silver, silver and green, and two sizes, 7000 word and the slimmer 5000 word shown here. Both pens are the same length, about 5 1/4 inches long. This example has the 14 karat gold Conklin Toledo nib instead of the Cushon Point nib that was introduced in 1936. The model also features the new 1936 patent clip. The 7000 Word Gauge Chevron sold for $7.50 and the 5000 sold for $5.00. Matching pencils were $3.75.

Hi, Folks!

This is the same pen as in a previous post, but I thought this background had more pop.

This is a Conklin Nozac V-Line piston filler in Nile Green celluloid in the longer rounded size, c. 1937. This 5 inch long V-Line Nozac has a single color repeating pattern of rows of chevrons separated by plain stripes with the chevron stripes running in opposite directions. Colors were Royal Blue, Burgundy, Pearl, Black, and Nile Green. The rounded V-Line pens came in two lengths, long and short, and featured sections in the same material as the cap and barrel. The rounded V-Line pens sold for $5.00, and matching twist action pencils were $3.50. The 1936 patent Conklin clip and the cap band are gold filled. They came with 14 karat gold Cushon Point nibs and some examples have a platinum or palladium plated masking. Nib grades offered were extra fine, fine, medium, coarse, stub medium, stub broad, left oblique, two way and Recorder in extra fine, fine and medium.

Hi, Folks,

This is a Conklin Nozac Chevron 7000 word piston filler in Black celluloid c. 1936-1937. Conklin introduced the Chevron line in September 1936. Chevron pens have celluloid caps and barrels with a patented design of translucent strips separated by strips of alternating direction rows of colored celluloid arrows. The celluloid sheets were wrapped into tubes that were then worked into finished caps and barrels. The seam can be found with careful examination. This tube construction method allowed the barrel to be a single piece where the translucent strips in the top half allow for viewing the ink level. You can see this pen's Word Gauge stamped on the top half of the barrel. The bottom half hides the piston mechanism. The Chevron line came in four colors: Red Pearl (red and silver), Gray Pearl, Green Pearl, and Black, and two sizes, 7000 word and a slimmer 5000 word pen. Both are the same length, about 5 3/8 inches long. This example has the 14 karat gold Conklin Toledo nib instead of the Cushon Point nib that was introduced in 1936. It also features the new 1936 patent clip. The 7000 Word Gauge Chevron sold for $7.50 and the 5000 sold for $5.00. Matching pencils were $3.75.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
