Unacceptable Pelikan M800 Nib?

bkpens

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased a Pelikan M800 (my first Pelikan). I noticed that the nib slit is off center which results in an uneven nib surface. It appears the inner edge has been smoothed, so the nib doesn't quite scratch. I would expect it to be smoother, but there is a noticeable feedback that I think I can attribute to this problem.

Does this seem unacceptable to you for such a premium pen?

I recently received an M800 with exactly this issue. I returned it to the seller (Cult Pens) who exchanged the nib and refunded my postage. I'd advise you to return yours for a nib swap as well. Despite this little hassle, I think this is a terrific pen. I have a few others and none had this problem.

It's unacceptable that any pen at any price would have tipping like that, especially one so expensive as an M800. I got a replacement nib unit for one of my M200 pens, and it had a similar problem, only worse. I took it upon myself to work the nib until it wrote properly, but I would never do that on an M800 nib. I would send it back and demand either a refund or a replacement.

Yes it does. :o I would definitely send that pen back if I had just bought it. :( In fact even if it were a less expensive pen, I would still send it back.

First of all, :W2FPN:

An excellent photo to show the fault. The tipping is a lob-sided mess. I would send it back, if possible.

Thanks all for your advice! I sent it back and Cult Pens replaced the nib for me. Very happy with their quick service to resolve my problem.

Glad it turned out positive for you. Enjoy!

Cult is my favourite on-line stationer from the UK. I have purchased three 14c Kaweco nib units from them & they are a source of the "unobtainable in North America" Pelikan 4001 Blue/Black ink (in bottles & carts).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
