Greetings Everyone!

I am new to the Fountain Pen Network and new to fountain pens in general. My interest began when I found a nice Sheaffer Craftsman Snorkel pen at an antique shop. I sourced a new ink sac and gasket to restore the pen.....now I'm hooked. I am more interested in vintage fountain pens at this time. I have since restored a Esterbrook J, a Sheaffer Touchdown and a couple of Parker 21's. Nothing huge but fun enough.

I hope to enjoy my time here and I am sure I will gain plenty of knowledge from you all.

Greetings from Pittsburgh! :W2FPN:

Sounds as if you're off to a good start on vintage pens. What ink(s) are you using?

I generally suggest that new people click on the "view new content" button at the top of the page, for a good overview of a range of topics. And to have a look at the pinned Index to the Ink Review Forum.

Wow, your first foray into repairs was a SNORKEL? I don't think I'd have the guts to do that -- I'm still trying to get up the nerve to re-sac my Esties! (Fortunately, there *are* repair people out there: a while back a friend of mine who just moved back to the area said she'd inherited a pen and it turned out to be a non-working Snorkel and I told her "don't worry -- I know a guy. Actually a COUPLE of guys!"; it's so good that I did have someone to take her pen to, because it turned out the spring was bad as well....)

Thanks for the warm welcoming!

As far as ink is concerned, I'm currently using Levenger ink. I scored a six pack at an antique/thrift store for $25. I also have a bottle of PR Sherwood Green.

Yes! The Snorkel was definitely a challenge but also a great reward after restoration. I actually enjoyed it! I just picked up an Estie SJ model :). I'm cleaning it up as we speak.

Welcome !

Vintage fountain pens can sometimes be challenging to use, but I find them always fun.

Fountain pens, of the mid-twentieth century, were made to be used. They were made for everyday writing. As a rule mine are good writers.

Have fun.

Hello and welcome to FPN.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
