I am reasonably sure this is a 51.

Me too.

It sure looks to be a P51 (aero MKII-III) except that I am not so sure about the filler shroud. I haven't seen a 51 filler shroud with the inscription of just the word PARKER (without the '51'). Could it be a replacement shroud from some UK duofold line pen?

We have a Parker 51 desk set, pencil and pen, the filler is the same as that pictured on the ebay ad.

$8.50 is an amazing price, we paid $225 for our set.

This late version of the Parker desk pen is confusing, as it appears the factory was mixing and matching parts at this point. The filler hoop reads the same as the Super 21 (press four times with no "51" in the engraving), the nib is gold, and the clutch ring is very narrow.

Some late Magnetix-era desk pen boxes are printed with a two-choice label listing either 45 or 51, so this hooded version appears to have been sold as a 51.

Compare the pen in question with the late 60's-70's version on this web page:

Always cliquey and a bit devisive isnt it.

Just a Parker 51 desk pen, regular filler for its time, remarkable error from a seller who is not a fool when it comes to identifying pens.

Lucky find, nice job.

I think he made a mistake, and I am thinking of sending him a bit more when I get the pen.

That would be an uncommonly decent thing to do.

And a decent thing by the seller would be to decline accepting the access payment given the honesty of the purchaser.

Note that the hood appears shrunk onto the collector. To remove the hood you may well need to cut it off and sacrifice the collector in the process. The hood on the thin clutch ring bodies is different than all other hoods and they are becoming difficult to even find in usable condition.

So, the taper and the nib are all that's good on this. Maybe I should have passed this one by. There did look to be scratches all over the hood. Possibly with the stalk it would make a good dart. You have to keep your sense of humor about these things, I like desk pens, and about the only pens I use are ballpoints.

This was sitting all by its lonesome, next to an Esterbrook desk set I was buying. I asked how much to include it in the purchase of the Esterbrook, and was told to add another $5.00. I think it was a great deal, and I couldn't pass it up either. The date code is 4th Q 1948. And it's a wonderfully smooth Fine nib. Now to find a base; it's currently housed in a spare Esterbrook base.

For what you paid I would have purchased all of them.

That's a nice looking pen. I always liked desk pens, and I bought a few 51 desk pens over the years. I have a fourth quarter 1948 pen with an Octanium nib, which must be a replacement. I took a few of these sections and bought Kullock hood and barrel sets and converted them to get some color into my pens. Whether you use this pen as a desk pen, or if you use it in a conversion, it will be a fun thing to have. Desk bases should be available. I see them from time to time on ebay. This is a great pen and it will make an interesting accent for your collection.

I've thought about getting a cap if I can't find a base, or if I find another Esterbrook to put in the spare base. It will remain a desk pen though. But the I've gotten the impression that caps may be more difficult to find than a base.

I have put caps on a couple of these, to take them to work. I used old caps without jewels or with dings They do work. You might find a parts pen with an acceptable cap. The bases are easier to find.

Please forgive me for hijacking your thread. When you guys buy from Ebay, do you buy your pens in the dark or do you have a way of feeling confident that you're getting what you expect to get? It's this fear that's always kept me from buying off Ebay and Amazon

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
