Twsbi Nib Size Discrepancy?

Tasmith-I have no argument with your reasoning. I my case it was just that, most recently, I was interested in only a single new nib and the shipping cost would have been a significant addition.

So can I assume if I had a 580 with a broad nib and compared it to an Eco with a broad nib, the 580 would produce a thicker line?

I'm not sure if that's safe to assume. It seems like a quality issue, even JetPens customer service seemed a bit surprised by it. What worries me is that if I get a replacement online, the same issue might happen, or if I go for the EF, it might *actually* be EF. So I'm returning it for a refund and planning to try buying the pen in person if I get a chance. Or maybe just stick with the Eco...

Though if you do have/purchase both pens, I'd love to see a comparison photo!

I had this problem other way around. My eco EF writed twice as wide as my 580 EF. I replaced the nib, because I wasn't sure that is nib supposed to be that way or not. I bought custom needlepoint nib for replacement.

Very interesting, thank you for this information. It seems there is indeed a quality issue with TWSBI nibs. What a shame. I'll stick to buying them in person from now on.

Can anyone who has both tell me how a Medium 580 nib compares to a Medium nib on a Mini? I have a Medium 580 that I'm very happy with, and I recently bought a Mini and went with a 1.1 mm stub nib, but it just doesn't do much for me, so I think I'm going to pick up a replacement nib section. Just curious how the nibs on the Minis compare to the 580?

What everyone seems to forget here- and this has always been the case regardless of manufacturer. A F or B or M or whatever is not a specific width, but a range due to the way nibs are made. Remember this is mass production not one at a time. A nib is x width +/- and really that is all that happened here.

In case it happens to be helpful to anyone else, I'll answer my own question here, as I ended up buying the Medium nib for the Mini.

The Medium nib for the Mini and the Medium nib for the 580 do not the same size line. The Mini Medium is noticeably finer than the 580 Medium. The Mini Medium is much closer to my Lamy Safari Fine than it is the 580 Medium. Sadly, I prefer the 580 Medium, and kind of wish I'd gone with the bold for the Mini (but buying a third nib for the same TWSBI Mini seems a bit excessive).

I don't know that I agree that's what happened here - while I understand nib sizes are not precise, I have never seen this large of a discrepancy across nibs labelled as the same size, and sold by the same company. Look at the writing sample from both pens, using the same ink. If you told me they both came from the same company, I would absolutely assume they were sold as different widths.

If discrepancies that large were common, all of the writing samples on this forum comparing nib sizes would be quite worthless.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
