Too Many Subforums Here?

I'll admit that I'm with the_gasman's previous post about mostly clicking on the "View New Content" button (which is what I recommend to new people).

Of course at the moment, I'm seriously behind, because I was without internet access (and even had spotty cell phone coverage) for most of the past couple of weeks, and I'm only NOW finally getting a chance to catch up. (40 PAGES :yikes: of new content!)

That's when you click "mark all as read" and move on. There is rarely enough that is THAT important to wade through 40 pages of posts. If it is, it'll surface again.

I can remember Lamy demanding it's own forum....OK, we have less Safari threads on the main fourms.

No, you need all those ink forums, in they would move much too fast had they just been the two only of once.

Especially with the Golden Age of Inks has hit it's full stride.

Go Crazy seemed like an interesting place to visit. Some day I'll go back and find out more. That way they are not 'wasting' my time by clogging up inky thoughts or reviews.

It saves time....and I don't have to be angry all those Go Crazy threads getting in the way of the regular inks.

Wahl-Eversharp could be in Parker and lost.

Actually, I think it was everyone else demanding that the Lamy fans have their own forum ...

My only complaint relates to what the_gasman was talking about. I regularly post topics that would fit into both Pen History as well as a specific pen brand, mostly Esterbrook. I've posted in both and lately I've focused more on the brand subforum as you know there will be people there who care about Esterbrook, while people in the Pen History tend to have their favorite pens, or favorite era or favorite type (stylographics or eyedroppers or safety pens?)

I'm wondering if there would be a way of tagging an entry for two subforums and it would show up in both? I don't know if the underlying platform allows for that. And then it could be widely abused. (My post is so fascinating it should show up everywhere you look!)

Ain't no such thing as perfection, just the constant striving for it.

As I was reading your post, I was thinking that it's a shame you post in specific subforums, because you are so well-informed that much of what you write is valuable way outside its specific topic. So in your case, yes, your posts really are so fascinating that ...

Max Dog, we spent a lot of time looking at the traffic and posts before creating the sub forums during our last reorganzation. The Inks, Inc. section is huge and has a lot of activity. We have six public sub-forums and we try and keep distinct so that readers are not inundated with posts that do not interest them. We also organized it by what subjects we thought would have the most interest.

Inky-Thoughts - is the general thread

Ink Reviews are for for commercially available inks and have standards for the reviews. This is the most formal section and where you would look for information about a particular ink. Each reviewer reviews only one ink.

Ink comparisons are where inks are grouped (by color, brand, type) and then the group is compared. These are usually performed by a single person. This also has the tests that are performed by our members like the fade tests.

After that, the sub-fora get crazy.

CRVs are the crazy comparisons where more than one person can compare more than one ink. These are almost always hand written posts and while they are a lot of fun, they are not for everyone.

Th-Inking outside of the bottle is for companies that want to test or develop new inks. We have a group of testers that review and test new inks before the inks are ready to hit the market. This is a beta test group. Most ink users will never want to be ink testers and this keeps the feedback about test inks out of the forum review section. Most of these inks will never be released to the mass market.

Finally, Inky Recipes contains recipes for making or mixing your own ink. Again, most pen users do not want to mix their own ink. This section currently has more posts than the prior section.

Anyway, before we made the sections, we solicited feedback and made changes. If you have specific inky questions, I'd love to see you in Inky thoughts and if you are interested in being a pen pal, let me know and I'll send you a CRV (Co-Razy-View).

Yeah, but you don't understand, Ron -- I was going through serious FPN withdrawal symptoms....

And Thursday was finally the "me" time (okay, between doing several loads of laundry including the two sleeping bags, which each run once on the bulky load and then a second time without detergent in the load, and which then get hung on the line in the basement after the dryer gets the worst of the wet out...).

Sad when someone's "artist's date" is sitting glued to a computer screen for hours, isn't it....

I certainly didn't intend to knock or criticize the moderators who keep this FPN running, as I am sure it is a lot of work and often their efforts don't get the praise they deserve. So thank you! And I appreciate Amberlea's detailed explanation of why the ink subforums are layed out as they are. Makes sense.

Well it certainly looks like from the responses everyone is generally quite happy with the layout of the FPN, so if anything hope this thread can serve as good feedback to all the moderators. So for myself, I will use the "new content" and search tool more. I do find the break out by brand, and region quite helpful.

Noooooooooo. For me it makes for more much more structured and enjoyable browsing. Why would I want to have to sift through a bunch of home-brew ink mixes to find an actual ink review?

At first I grumbled....any change not instituted by one's self, is there to be grumbled at.

Ah ha.....the view from the other side of the box....others demanding a Lamy forum..... :o...I can see that......now.

When one is outside the box....one's personal secretary does all the writing, and carries the signature pen.

Up to this point, the existing structure works for me. The subforum titles generally guide me to what I want, and this approach is far better than very broad categories that require more searching.

Why aren't there sub-forums for blue ink? It is too hard to look through all those posts about blue-black and green and brown and orange ink when all you want is blue ink information. Some of the supposed blue ink posts are not even really blue but rather turquoise or Periwinkle or ultramarine or Navy.

I really only use blue black. But you are right, there are too many gossamer inks being tracked, making it hard to wade through.

Not too many subfora, though, but there might be too many thoughts afoot.

I think we are short one forum.

Would that be the one called "Pinned Posts"?

How about "Is my pen authentic?" Although that might cut traffic in the MB forum by 50% and almost get rid of the need for its existence. :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
