I recently received a Waterman fountain pen that had been my brother's. I cleaned it thoroughly, inserted the converter and tried to fill it. It wouldn't draw up any ink. I filled the converter with a syringe and started to write with it and found that it leaked. I emptied it and cleaned it again. When I examined the converter, I discovered a hairline crack in the part that attached to the pen. So I thought that was the problem for why it wouldn't draw up ink and why it leaked. I ordered a new converter that arrived yesterday. I installed it and was able to fill the pen, but it still leaks. So I guess I need to get it repaired. Any recommendations out there? I don't know what model it is, but it is more than likely between 10 and 20 years old. When I was able to write with it, it wrote beautifully - so smooth! And because it belonged to my brother, I really want to be able to use it, although I don't want to spend a fortune having it repaired. The ink seemed to be coming from the place where it screws together - ie, where you take it apart to fill or change cartridges, if that makes sense. While I've used fountain pens for a long time, I'm obviously not very knowledgeable about them. :P

Could be the converter isn't pushed on all the way. Or some other problem with the converter.

 

Get a pack of cartridges and put a cartridge on the pen.

Thank you Vintage for your response. I put a cartridge in the pen last week and it isn't leaking - hooray!

 

I sure thought I had put the converter in all the way. And it's brand new, so not sure what was wrong. But I'm happy it isn't leaking and the cartridge ink is actually quite a nice color.

Turns out the pen continued to leak even with a cartridge installed - I just didn't notice it right away. Luckily for me, I discovered it while visiting an artist friend in Little Rock (actually he discovered it - while using it). Anyway, he knew of pen store that could repair fountain pens - Vanness Pens. He took it to them and they replaced the whole nib assembly and now it writes beautifully.

I have a pen that does similar.

The nipple on the back of the section that goes into the cartridge/converter was broken, and it LEAKED. YUK.

The fix will probably be the same as your fix.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..
