Which Nib Unit Goes In Which Pen?

Larry Barrieau

Recommended Posts

I put three spare TWSBI nib units in a drawer. I just took them out and want to sell two of them but I don't know which nib units go in which pens. I assumed that it would indicate somewhere which pen would take that unit. There are three possibilities: Eco, 580, Mini. Is there a way to tell? Thanks

Looking for a black SJ Transitional Esterbrook Pen. (It's smaller than an sj)

Hej Larry,

1. Which nib "size":

They are all #5 nibs - which means, that they use an ink feed of a 5mm diameter.

2. Which nib "type"

TWSBI apparently uses JoWo/Bock nibs at the moment (they apparently switched a few times from Schmidt ... ?)

Knowing that they all use the #5 nibs we can choose a nib from e.g. here:

http://www.peter-bock.com/products/nib-types

a. ECO

The TWSBI ECO uses a Type 180. Small shoulder.

b. 580 (AL)

The TWSBI 580 /AL) uses a Type 076. Wide shoulder.

3. What nib types fit?

a. Only #5 nibs from which brands fit?

aa. Pelikan nibs - M2xx nibs , thus the M4xx nibs fit too and someone smashed a M6xx nib in theirs.

bb. Pilot "5" nibs (Custom 91 / Custom Heritage 92 etc.). They fit the 580's, but in the ECO's you need to reall gently "push" the cap on.

cc. Schmidt/Bock/JoWo as stated.

dd. Karas Kustoms - yes, but lenght wise i would visually say no. I think they use a #5 060, but nevertheless it is too small.

ee. and apparently some people also used some #5.5 from FPR

b. How do i know?

I neglected my 580 and ECO and wanted to "pimp my write".

I tried a M200 nib in them before with some success.

At first i tried a Nemosine Signularity nib in the 580 - it's a #6, so it didn't work obviously.

Then i discovered, that the Bock 180 Type fits the ECO and the 580 - i actually like the look of the Pelikan M6xx and upwards nibs - a 180 in a 580 actually replicates this quite nicely.

And now the "Titanium" hype is going on - and actually i am waiting for a Type 180 in this material to reach me ... let's see how it goes!

Hope that helps.

I wish you all the best in your efforts. :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
