Hi Bearcat!

That was an amazing link you found!!

It makes me want to dig out my old Rotring drawing board, and put it back in use.

He definitely had to have an inside source and the ability to spend some money on his hobby.

I wish I would have got into Rotring sooner.

Hello everyone,

I'm the guy who runs the Unofficial Rotring blog. Thanks to everybody for your kind words, support is always appreciated !

@ MYU : Thanks for quoting me as a member of this forum

@ collectors item : There's 8 different type of Rapidograph that were produced (not counting the 80's cartridge model), each will have its own exploded view and I'm working on a comparative charts with all 8 models. I guess this will be really helpful for identification purpose...

My first "good" writing implement was a Rotring 700 Rollerball. Still have it right here in a leather case in my drawer but it honestly doesn't see that much use anymore. I also got the matching pencil although the mechanism is broken/out of adjustment and I don't use it either... love the look of them both and wasn't really thrilled when they changed the design to include all those hard angles. any thoughts on what refill ink i can use in the rollerball and if there is a place to service the pencil if i ever decide to do it?

hello NOS

If you like the Rotring 700, you will be delighted by my latest post covering 4 Rotring 700 prototype. You can read it here : https://unofficialrotring.wordpress.com/2017/03/25/rotring-700-fountain-pen-prototypes/

I also love the look of this 700 line, which I find very elegant and classy! For servicing your pen, I don't think Rotring will be of any help, but you can give it a try... I always rely on local shop when there's something I couldn't fix myself.

Hello Rotringbug, great website! What is your experience with maintaining the Rotring Rapidograph's? I've seen some of them come up on ebay, and just wondering how the rubber plunger stands up. Also saw a sterling silver fountain pen that was a deal in need of some love, but I'm not confident in my metal working skills to remove the dent in the side.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
