Which Ink Is Going To Be Your Next Ink And Why?

Since I'm not an easy person to shop for (and I don't like receiving gifts) I tell family members who are insistent on buying presents to focus their attention on ink. I have a long list on amazon ranging from cheap (~$8/bottle) to expensive (~$35/bottle). I avoid buying bottles for myself so there's always plenty of options for people to choose from while I experiment with various samples. I'm about to order a set of samples from Vannes so I can try a few LE Sailor and KWZ inks.

Platinum Carbon Black, cuz I might like it for sketching, and Sailor Jentle oku yama, cuz I'm looking for a companion ink (page numbers and such) to go with yama dori.

Sailor Jentle Yama-dori :happycloud9: I got Sailor Souten as my first ink and I'm looking for a darker ink to give my notes variation. I usually use black but I love Yama-dori in pictures so decided to go with it. I'm so excited :P

I got Yama-dori a couple weeks ago... it's a *really* interesting ink... it looks totally different color on different papers, and even on the same paper in different light. Then you add the whole sheen thing.

Let me know how it pairs well with yama dori? I've saved up the money to get a bottle of okuyama next, after I get yama-dori c:

Finally went for Ina Ho, mainly because the colour seems nice, it will probably contrast well with my other inks, and the reviews have been good. The other alternatives were Ambre de Birmanie and Helianthus. it will take some time to get to me though.

In all truth after you research something for so long it sticks in your head, I also bought it to take it off of my mind!!

Lamy Petrol or Robert Oster Fire and Ice. I love blue inks with shading and sheen.

I am worried that the Petrol will sell out everywhere like the Lamy Dark Lilac did so I am buying this one first.

I told Miaxina I would let hem know if Sailor Jentle yama-dori and oku-yama played well together... I'm very happy with the pairing and have started using it in my tarot notebook and tarot journal. And, um, no new inks for me for a while now! I'm kinda awash.

Thank you so so much! This looks lovely, I'm glad I made the purchase! :bunny01:

Noodler's Berning Red. I had to. The story and the label was just too much fun to resist. Now I need to find the right paper. :)

  • 2 weeks later...

You sound like my kinda guy. I still shoot 35mm film, love analog watches, and have been known to favor Feather brand double-edged razor blades.

Oh yes, Feather all the way, though I can't get from a shavette to a straight despite hours of honing!

My criterias are color, sheen, depth and behavior as read in reviews... then meaningfulness, opportunity (good price on ink I was interested in, exchange rate in my favor in country of origin, etc.), rarity, originality... and a lot of impulse. 😋

Diamine Eau de Nil is very beautiful.

Good luck on your quest.

A bottle of Penbbs #222 Red has just arrived from Malaysia, after a two month waiting - because I find great to have an ink from a fountainpen forum from the other side of the world.

Another bottle of Louis Vuitton's Rouge Libertin, to add to the others, is waiting at my best friends house - because I love this ink, and want to be able to use for a longtime.

My next ink? Probably Montblanc Lucky Orange, but I am still pondering abut it - because it is a joyful colour that shades well.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
