What's the big deal with washing the pen? I'd say clean and give it to your cousin, if he/she was promised or is expecting such a pen, or fill it up with ink and use it.

There's no big deal, actually, it was just that I bought it from Ebay and was surprised to find a pristine sac and no evidence of previous use of ink around the nib, so I wanted the advice of FPN about what I should do with a pen that was potentially in un-used mint condition. Someone suggested that it shouldn't even be washed – I don't know why but I was prepared to adhere to the advice that I was given.

My cousin has no prior knowledge or expectation of any pen: it's just that I thought that it would be a bit out of the ordinary. As the quality of the pen is much better than I had thought when I viewed it on Ebay, I have since been tempted to keep it for myself, so (to ease the guilt of such a decision) I have bought a Parker Duofold Senior to give to my cousin.

Despite the back-up plan, I still haven't used the Duofold Standard as I find it difficult to breach the mint status.

Cheers,

David.

I assume he has already started using it. Hasn't he?

My cousin's birthday isn't until July and, anyway, I have bought him an alternative gift – a UK Parker Duofold Senior. I am hoping that it will arrive in the next couple of days.

The Duofold Standard remains unused as I can't bring myself to tarnish its likely mint status.

Cheers,

David.

Have some courage. Lol.

Ah, Khan, that's my trouble: I oscillate between the lion and the lamb!

I bought a NOS 80s' MB146 in pristine condition. Thought I would keep it uninked. But within a few hours of its arrival I was writing with it. It has a very wet stubbish B nib.

Don't forget to put a little precious resin oil on the pen if it sat unused.

Khan, you are a very bad person for dangling your temptation in front of me – and I thank you sincerely for doing so!

Cheers,

David.

All pens start out as "mint" and then get "breached" as they are put to their intended use. So if I may ask: what do you plan to do with the pen if not write with it?

But you are still resisting. Aren't you? You haven't as yet succumbed to the temptation I have been dangling in front of you. Evasive. Just evasive.

But I understand. Just keep gazing at, or even playinh with, the pen as long as you can resist the temptation to write with a 'brand new old' pen.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
