Rhodia Grid = Resists Ink?

sketchstack

Recommended Posts

I have a spiral bound Rhodia grid notebook and I'm dismayed that some inks don't soak in on the grid lines.

Anyone else experience this? Any inks to avoid?

I feel like a heretic criticising Rhodia paper but I occasionally find portions of a page that give the impression that there is a reluctance to accept ink, as if the paper had been rubbed with a candle. I still use Rhodia paper but I have less frustration with so-called lesser makes, my favourites being Silvine (especially the Perfecto) notebooks and the Black n' Red notebooks.

Changing from the renowned quality of Rhodia paper to Silvine/Black n' Red is like the comfort one feels when removing one's suit and changing into chinos and sweatshirt.

Cheers,

David.

I write with Pilot Blue Black ink on Rhodia spiral bound, grid ruled, notebooks but I have not noticed this.

Hmm. I just happen to have a bottle of this exact ink so I'll give it a try.

I had a 'test page' in my notebook and I realized that some inks exhibit this behavior while others don't --unfortunately I don't remember what the exact inks were, and I have too many to quickly trial-and-error.

I've just finished filling three of these pads in a short period of time and noticed nothing of that kind of behaviour. Inks used: Noodler's AirCorp blue black, Sailor Jentle blue black. Sometimes Diamond Monaco red, but maybe not enough to be meaningful.

I'm a big fan of Rhodia paper as it was reasonably priced in the pen shop near to where I lived, but I do notice is I rest my left hand on the page when I write it will sometimes leave enough oil from my finger tips to cause problems with the ink flowing and sticking to the paper. Could this be the issue you're having sketchstack?

As for cheaper paper that I find good with fountain pens in Ireland there is a stationery shop called Easons, their economy refill pads always seemed really good as far as bleed through and feathering goes, at least with my (european sized, and wet) fine nibs.

I think I've experienced what you're talking about, but this specific issue seems to be in whatever Rhodia uses to make the blue lines for the grid.

Well that's because you are using the best all-around ink on the planet.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
