I have several topics I have been thinking of putting together for FPN, but I have a very limited amount of free time to work on organizing thoughts and taking pictures. All of the topics I am thinking of are interesting to me, so help me prioritize what I should work on first, second, third, etc. by voting for what you want to see. If you have no interest in any of these topics or think my posts are rather pointless, you can tell me so in the poll too. :D

Here are brief descriptions of each topic I am thinking about:

Urushi pens made outside Japan - A review of pens from a few people specialising in using urushi in a Japanese style, but not in Japan.

Small batch pens: Asia edition - An overview of pens from my collection from small manufactureers who are based in Asia. These are small shops with only a few people and low production of mostly hand-made pens.

Small batch pens: Americas edition - An overview of pens from my collection from small manufactureers who are based in the Americas. These are small shops with only a few people and low production of mostly hand-made pens.

Small batch pens: Europe edition - An overview of pens from my collection from small manufactureers who are based in Europe. These are small shops with only a few people and low production of mostly hand-made pens.

Montblanc #9 nibs over the years - An overview of the famous nib and how it has changed over the years, including thoughts on writing characteriestics for various iterations.

Big nib pen comparison - A comparison of pens in my collection with large nibs, including #7, #8, #9, #12 and #50 nibs. This has been a popular topic in the past so these would just be my pens that meet the criteria.

A collection of Danitrios - A review of the Danitrio pens I have collected, similar to my Bexley thread.

Join the Broadside: a home for lovers of wide nibs - A place for all of us to post our thoughts and photos of the wide nibs we love. I am talking BB on up. To paraphrase Sir Mix-a-lot, "I like big nibs and I cannot lie."

All of the topics will be based on my collection (past and present) so they will not be exhaustive, but I have a lot of pens so they will be a good starting place for further discussion. I hope to bring more attention to topics that are of interest to me and encourage knowledge sharing from others.

Please vote or share your thoughts in the comments. At some point in the not too distant future I will take a snapshot of the results and start working on the most requested topic.

While several topics are interesting, I voted Urushi pens made outside Japan. My vote reflects that I am in the waiting patiently mode on a pen coming from Ernest Shin (Hakumin Urushi Kobo). The pen is on a base of the Extended Mina from Edison pens and reflects my vocation and theology.

May we live, not by our fears but by our hopes; not by our words but by our deeds; not by our disappointments but by our dreams.

Hi Kelly. I have had 2 pens from Ernest and he does great work. Then only issue is timing. I have a third pen he is likely to get from me for customization.

Please share your pen once you get it.

I'd like to see the comparison of nibs rolled into the survey of lacquerware from around the world with particular emphasis on big broad nibs found in small batches and that show shading and line variation.

Yes, of course. It would be a post I would start and then encourage others to share. Oblique nibs would be welcomed too.

I would expect Ghost Plane to participate in the thread. :)

Zaddick I voted small batch pens in Europe as I think that may incorporate some of the other topics in a small way and is the best compromise across a bunch of fantastic potential topics.

You have an excellent collection which I admire (I like the MBs, but my real passion is modern artisanal pens). I am sure that whatever topic you do it will be a great read and I am looking forward to it.

I only buy old used cheap pens....vintage.

But don't mind seeing what is to be had in Europe.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

The cheapest lessons are from those who learned expensive lessons. Ignorance is best for learning expensive lessons.

Hi All. Thanks for the votes and comments so far.

I think the European small maker topic will be a good one to work on and will include a fair amount of large nibs and some urushi too. I can cover a lot of ground in that topic. I have pens from Romillo, Faggionato, Astoria, Goldfink, Manu Propria, Gimena, Oldwin and a few others. I am a little on the fence about including my Conid, but I like the guys so I probably will.

  • 2 weeks later...

OK, two weeks in and the people who have chosen to speak said they want some info on "small batch" European pens. I'll start working on it during my free time.

Thanks to all who took the time to vote!

Zaddick, how do I find the other topics you've written on? I've gone through your topic history and found the Torelli MB and Bexley topics which I really enjoyed reading.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
