If we were to forget the past history of TWSBIs cracking etc and confine ourselves to just considering the 580AL. With its metal section, how likely is it to crack? How many have had cracking issues with this particular model? Perhaps better still, how many haven't had cracking issues with this particular model?

Could the 580AL be the turning point for TWSBI, onwards and upwards from here.

This might be a good forum to have a poll on so we can see people cast votes on it. I've had mine over a month, carried it in front pocket, pants pocket, and have had no issues so far.

Sometimes I'll pull out a notebook and write down total nonsense just because I love to feel a pen move across a page.

I've owned mine for around a year, maybe a bit longer maybe a bit shorter, and mine hasn't cracked. It's still in excellent condition, but then all my pens at any time are either in my hand, stored away in my pen wallet for when they're having a breather, or they're sitting on a cloth cushion on my desk to protect them from microscratches..

There's already a poll about Twsbi cracking:

And about the 580Al cracking

Based on that excellent suggestion I have created a poll (I think). Never created one before so lets hope for the best.

Ah.. So there is. And they pretty much tell me what I wanted to know.

Thanks for pointing that out to me.

You don't need that 3rd option in the poll. It doesn't achieve anything and it distracts from and crowds out the true figures. You only need "yes" or "no"

  • 1 month later...

Well, I've only had mine since yesterday, and haven't inked it up yet. So, I'm not in any position to answer the poll one way or another....

Just picked up an AL-580 Pink with a B nib. So keeping fingers crossed. Ironically, I had gone in the store (Birmingham Pens, in Pittsburgh) to have a look at the new Pacific Blue Lamy Al-Star in person. And the color was... okay I guess, but didn't really wow me. Then I noticed that there was a pink AL-580 under the counter, and it was all over.

Just hoping I can get used to a pen that is a more than a bit top-heavy when posted....

I'm now scrolling through this forum for any tips (such as how often the piston needs silicone grease) because the directions were a little, um, scant -- *and* seemed to be for a 530(!). And what the heck is "bearing grease" -- and why isn't included, when both a wrench and a container of silicone grease were (and what the heck is the wrench for, anyway...).

Thinking it's inaugural fill should be something that looks good against that pink. Maybe some of the bottle of De Atramentis Sky Blue, which I just picked up at the same time (along with a couple of other D'A inks).

I have 4 with the oldest one about 8 months old now. They are between two cases and for the most part are kept in my backpack. No issues so far and they work great!

I'm ordering a 580 as soon as payday gets here (Friday feels so far away!). Starry Night is my plan for the first fill once I've got one. :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
