Seem reasonable. I know two of the sellers and they are reputable.

First pen has a custom cap. Doesn't say so, but it might have been done by Ariel Kulloch. So that's an *extremely* good price (his stuff is way more than I can afford to pay, and truthfully, even if I could afford them I likely wouldn't because they're too bling-y for me, which is kinda the anthesis of what the design of a Parker 51 is). It's not a horrible price even if it was a standard cap Lustraloy cap. Dunno about the second pen; but the 3rd pen is from Pen Shop of Memphis, and IMO his prices are a bit on the steep side in general.

Basically, all of those are listed for more than I have paid (even having repairs done) on any of my 51s. But you have to remember that I scored two 51s (a late MkII Aero and a Cedar Blue Vac) for the whopping combined price of $26.75 US a couple of years ago, because they had the wrong caps on them -- and I knew what they were and the sellers (and the guy opening the cases for me DIDN'T). But I keep looking for a Midnight Blue Aero and I've seen them on eBay for roughly the price of the 2 grey ones (links #2 and #3) -- or more. Which is partly why I don't have one.... Even my Plum Demi Aero was a bit under $72 even with shipping, but that was several years ago. And I was absolutely astounded that I won the auction. I was absolutely convinced I'd have been outbid ("What is this snipe of which you speak? That would maybe happen to the person(s) who outbid ME....") especially since it ended on a Saturday afternoon. I can only surmise that (1) people didn't want a user grade or a Demi; (2) people were afraid my maximum was too high -- trust me, it wasn't; (3) people thought it was really a Burgundy; or (4) people were just not paying sufficient attention. I didn't even see the end of the auction -- I was out all day and then went to a party and got home at 1:30 AM and almost didn't go on to check on it because I was tired (but I did because I was a little curious as to what the final hammer price was). It hadn't even hit my intermediate maximum -- and certainly not my final max bid (the one where I was ready to just walk away and shrug and say "well, maybe next time..."). Only I got extremely lucky and didn't need a "next time".

As for these pens (or any pen on eBay, for that matter) -- the price is what someone is willing to pay for them. I, personally, am not. I'm kinda the Queen of Cheapskates.... Other people? Well, it's their money....

As for the original question about the first listing: it's got a replacement customized cap, so it's a frankenpen. But no, I don't think it's a fake. The seller has clearly disclosed that it's a custom cap.

The first pen probably doesn't have an Ariel Kullock cap. I have one of his and they are really beaten, sometimes right through. There are USA customizers who have made hammered caps.

The gray pen, being 1948, might have had the parts as seen done by Parker, if they ran out of dove gray hoods, or if it were a later replacement hood. One would think they were more consistent than that, though, so it could be a later replacement. Maybe the owner liked or wanted the two tone treatment. .

The hammered cap is a mixture of parts if anyone cares.

A mixture of parts? I don't understand, but I don't know much about vac 51s.

But it has a wide cap band. Unlike the narrow lip on an aero cap.

The cap shell is marked PARKER above the line and has a Parker clip. The pseudo-band is narrow.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
