New Pic Mont Blanc 149 Engraved

~ Is there any established custom concerning how engraving is placed on a cap?

Is it typically to the right of the clip, as shown in Autodex's example?

Is it typically from the cap band towards the Montblanc star?

Are signatures or other names placed in such a format based on precedent, or are there other considerations?

I'm not so sure. My brother has the Meisterstück Solitaire Carbon & Steel Classique 144 Fountain Pen and obviously the cap cannot be engraved, so he had his done on the clip with his initials. I have to say I didn't think it would turn out well, but it surprisingly did.

He has been pushing me to do the same with my 145 and 146, but I'm quite hesitant. Now seeing this one done, I think it may not be so bad. It almost looks like a special edition! Just that it's yours haha.

Perhaps try it with one, to see how it turns out.

I like the idea of discreet initials on the clip of your brother's fountain pen.

It's good to know that there are two active fountain pen users in your family!

I have to say the clip engraving is quite nice. Because there is no change in color (the metal is just silver) it's definitely quite discrete. Engraving on the cap is nice I think if I were able to have a nice signature. Unfortunately I do not feel mine is nice enough or beautiful enough to belong on the cap of my MB... haha

I really like the style & size of that engraving :)

I have seen one 149 with the signature of former Prime Minister. It was gift to remember an important interview ,so that should have a positive impact on the value of it or I'm wrong?

Hi,

I am not a fan of engraving names or initials on the pen, however, i am happy with engraving patterns to make it unique and special.

Thanks,

Yui

Looks great!

I have half a dozen MB's engraved with my name and don't plan on parting with any of them!

Regarding left/right side of the clip - on the engraving form, they ask if you are LH or RH :)

~ Thank you for that information.

As I've never had a Montblanc fountain pen engraved, I've never seen the form.

Autodex- where did you get your pen engraved at? Because, I am interested in getting 2 of my MB 149 pens engraved with my signature like you have on yours. Thanks for the pictures.

No worries, Tom :)

Montblanc offers many options;

Engraving emphasises the exclusive character of Montblanc’s writing instruments. Choose from a selection of nine different font styles to add the recipient’s name or initials or to engrave an important date or a personal message.

For an even more unique gesture, a personal signature can also be engraved. Embellishing any precious resin or metal surface as well as the clip of a writing instrument, engraving of lettering can be carried out in gold, silver or blind.

The images and the quote significantly expand my limited understanding of Montblanc's engraving options.

What you've posted presents a range of options to accommodate varying tastes.

This is unexplored territory for me. Many thanks for the comprehensive road map.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
