I know right? In terms of absolute length it does not look that much longer than 149, so Im guessing its more about the girth of the pen.

It is much longer when uncapped and the nib is extended. The reason it looks simlar in lengh toa 149 is because it has a retractible nib so the cap sits much farther down, like a safety pen.

I do wonder how you can write with the 1914 though given its size, anyone care to post a picture?

I thought about that when I was buying a pen, so the day before I took these two pictures to compare.

But really.. it gets very comfortable after 1-2 weeks of handling it.

Here's the comparison to the 149 uncapped

OK Ive had some time to think about this and also Pravda's pictures helped a lot. The 1914 just seems far too big to be practical for me I think. Im leaning towards one of the other options now. Ive not looked into the skeletons so will have a scan around for whats available, prices etc.

I have to say though, the 1914 is a popular choice if you look at the poll results thus far!

I voted for the Martele, but on second thoughts, have seen so many people who like B nibs overjoyed with the 1912, so that might be a nice change from the 149!

At first I voted for another 149 in O3B + a Heritage 1912, but after going through this thread and doing a little research, I'm leaning more towards the 1914. I knew it was pretty large, but i had no idea it was THAT large. Pretty cool...

Hi all, here's an update. Ive placed an order for another 149, and it will go back to MB to have an O3B nib fitted. That will do me for awhile I think. I also have quite a few ink bottles coming my way so this will be fun :)

That's great news!

An OBBB nib offers a delightful writing experience.

Is the 149 you ordered yellow gold, platinum or red gold?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
