Allright MB forumites,

I find myself in the fortunate position of being able to treat myself to a new purchase. On what exactly? Well, this is where I need your help. I am really unsure which way to go at the moment. My daily writers are 149s with O3B nibs.

Here are the choices in no particular order:

1) Solitaire martele OBB - strangely attracted to the look of this one. Funny, because I didn't think the Tolstoy was a looker at all..... in fact I thought the hammered silver portion of the Tolstoy was ugly in person... but this one I find super shexy.

2) Another 149 O3B - this is the boring choice. I have 2 of these. Love them, I know they work for me, and always nice to have another colour option. If I go this route I might pair it with a 1912 in OBB as well....

3) Heritage 1914 - Now we're getting into serious money. I have never seen one in person and probably can't anytime soon. I'll have to purchase it blind and that scares me given the purported size and of course the cost. But dammit its beautiful.

4) Hitchcock - they look interesting and Ive been following the other thread on this forum with interest (Hitchcock vs moon pearl). At the end of the day though... it doesn't really wow me, Im getting it only because its offered to me.

5) Buy nothing - Blasphemy!

6) Something else? Go vintage? Other brands? My main reservation with other brands is that I am very partial to MB oblique nibs, and no other brands give you a writing experience this well out of the box. Most will require some kind of customisation which I can't be bothered with.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Here I hope this helps a bit :)

That being said, from the above I would choose the 1914. Quite rare Montblanc produces a pen of this size and it definitely stands out from its peers. Took a few days to learn how to properly poise it in your hands to produce words on a page, then it becomes too much fun.

I would also suggest a very sought after Agatha Christie or an Ernest Hemingway.

If you are willing to pay 1914 prices, I would also suggest a skeleton, i.e. 90 Years Anniversary or the Blue Hour. That's another level altogether, but having a O3B nib on a see-through pen with the ink inside is another experience.

Thanks Pravda. Whats the writing experience like with the 1914? Im guessing its hefty? Is it balanced or does it feel hefty? With the cap off is it similar or bigger than 149? looks like it a bigger barrel - is that right?

Im not into the snake theme so will pass on the Christie but will look into the Hemingways.

Pravda makes excellent suggestions.

If you are buying new then you can always get the nib you want so it's all about the pen. In which case the 1914 is the way forward. If you can live with a narrower nib the Hemi has to be a front runner.

The 1914 is a BEAST compared to the 149 uncapped. It takes time to get used to it. The cap top is amazing though. I have some photos compared to a 149 if Pravda does not. I can post them tomorrow.

I would go for the 1914 and get the OBB.

This is the correct answer. I would do this.

Go for the CORAL 1914 - this is a stunner.

(The 1912 titanium is not available anymore to my knowledge)

I have both and I agree the coral is amazing, my favorite by far; but I no longer feel that it is worth paying more than double just for the color. I would stick with black.

The 1912 Titanium is still available on display at Montblanc Dubai Mall, Dubai, UAE. In case anyone's interested.

Color, Montblanc star, gold trim, edition size 333... but you're right, it's a hefty premium.

I just don't like the black one from appearance reasons, so I declined several times on it.

Interesting to hear about the Titanium 1912...

Wow! This is intimidatingly large isn't it! Wield this pen and all will behave around you!

I like my 1914. It's both a fountain pen and a defensive weapon. I got the OBB nib--only wish I could have afforded the coral.

The Blue Hour Skeleton is a beauty, though.

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

I know right? In terms of absolute length it does not look that much longer than 149, so Im guessing its more about the girth of the pen.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
