Help With Parker 51 With 14K Gold Cap

Recommended Posts

I am new to this network so if I do something wrong I apologize in advance. I have a Parker 51 pen with a 14K Gold cap that belonged to my Dad. I've been doing a bit of research but I can't seem to find any information on what I think is the date code. The barrel is stamped "Parker "51" Made in USA 5. I'm hoping that someone can shed some light on the pen. It seems to be working properly.

I may have posted in the wrong place. If so, please lead me in the correct direction. Many thanks...

Welcome home. Pull up a stump and set a spell. Near the 5 there may be what looks like periods; 3, 2, 1 or none of them. Look closely and tell us what you see.

From what I've gleaned in my short time w/ Parker 51's, a 5 with one period designates your pen was made in the 3rd quarter of 1945....

I think 1945 was still the time when the '51 was in it's Vacumatic stage. Correct me if I'm wrong.

i think you are safe.

I was away for a few days and didn't get a chance for respond to look at the boards. I wanted to thank all of you for your input. It's very much appreciated. In response to FarmBoy the top (cap) is stamped "14K" in two places. I'll try to post a picture of the cap. Many thanks again...

You have a 14K solid gold smooth cap. Less common than the Empire cap and more common than the other 14K caps.

There is an article on these in an upcoming issue of Pen World magazine. That the pen dates to 1945 is consistent with the cap. The pen would have been 50USD in 1945.

The cap could be de-dented if so desired.

You might consider getting the pen serviced if you are going to use it.

Thats a seriously nice family heirloom you have there - and it would be well worth the effort, as has been suggested, to get the pen professionally restored and that cap de-dented ( if such a word exists!)

Its to be cherished, used and passed on to the next generation - after all, its already approx 71 years old

Edit. pls post a few more pictures of the nib and the end of the barrel - is it a double jeweled pen, and does it have a 14k tassie ring also?

Here are a few more pictures. I don't know how to take the pen apart to look at the nib and I'm afraid to take a chance. I'll try to learn how to do it.

Why is it that in these pics the pen looks green and not black. Is the blind cap ring also hallmarked?

Get the pen restored.

The lower part of the cap is stamped in 2 places. One part reads "14K Gold / Made in USA" and when rotated it also reads "14K" on the opposite side. In addition, it's also stamped "14K" on the top of the clip. I don't know what the tassi ring is.

You have the small cap at the end of the barrel. And that cap has a jewel just like the pen cap top has. This small cap is the blind cap unscrewing of which reveals the filler.

Does the ring around the jewel on this small cap has any stamping?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
