Pilot Custom 743 Stub A Big Disappointment

DNC

Recommended Posts

I have a Pilot SU nib in a 912 and yes Virginia it is without a doubt the worst stub nib I own. It is a sorry excuse for a stub nib. It's not a bad nib but it is a very bad Stub nib.

Sounds like I might love it, as long as there is detectable line variation. I don't care for a big difference in line variation. Let me take that back a little: I enjoy writing with a conventional stub nib, but later, when I look at my handwriting, I don't like it as much.

I just cleaned out the pens from the Pilot Sailor comparison and put it away but I'll get it out and try to do a writing sample for you.

I have a 912 with a stub nib. It isnt the best stub in my lot (I have a few Factory Sheaffers that are perfection) but I don't hate my SU nib and mine really does write like a, say .8mm soft stub. It is a little boxy (a very odd grind indeed) but I think they would benefit from a kiss on the wheel or two (and they are nice fat tipped stubs so would take well to a grind) but I don't hate mine. If you are expecting a sharp 1.1 italic you are going to be unhappy, if you are looking for a forgiving medium soft stub for writting in a notebook than I find mine to be quite nice for that purpose. I dare say I get more stub qualities than the samples shown here. Perhaps it is the angle? it is a very fat boxy stub but if you hit that lower lip the horizontal strokes are quite fine indeed.

Sorry you are disapointed. I love the 912 generally, enough that i have 2 of them one soft round nib (amazing!) one stub.

Your milage varied.

Hi DNC

Your nib shld look like this

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/FP/PILOT%20Custom%20743%20SU%20nib/P1110481.jpg

It shld be well shaped like that

the nib is like a box shape if you look at its profile as one post above mentioned.

One of the edges comes into contact with paper.

🙂

The Japanese are not known for sloppy QC so I am a little surprised with your experience.

Hope you can find a happy resolution to this

Yes, I am afraid my pen's nib looks just like that. There is nothing wrong with my pen except a poor design for a stub. :(

It is a great pen with a tipped (very heavily tipped) stub which means if you buy it from a nibber or bring it to a show I bet you could make a killer stub out of it. Lord knows there is enough tipping to grind.

If one has the money, it maybe pays to buy from a nibber and ask them to sharpen the stub up before the ship it.

I always got the impression from mine that a kiss or two on the grinding wheel could turn it into a killer .8 stub or cursive italic.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
