Lamy Vista Ef Nib Width

PetrKey

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Today, I bought my first Lamy pen - Vista. Although I really I really like the smoothness of the pen, there is one thing which bothers me. It's the line width. Is it normal for EF nib to write this thick? It writes even thicker than my Pelikan M200 Fine nib. Is this normal, or is it wider than normal EF lamy nib?

Thank you

Are you sure it's an EF nib (i.e. that they didn't give you the wrong one - it should be marked with the size)? Are you sure you're not applying any pressure when you write? (I'm assuming you are sure, since you compared it to a Pelikan M200.) Is it possible the ink is a wet / spreading kind of ink?

Assuming no external factors like the above, I'd say you got a poorly ground EF and you would be justified in returning it for one that's been tested and verified as truly EF...

FWIW, the Goulet Pens Nib Nook tool might be useful for you, there are some non-fountain pens in there with .7mm line widths indicated (Pilot G2 and a Cross Click rollerball, maybe others), and the Lamy EF matches those pretty well.

Hi PetrKey,

I believe it has also been mentioned that Lamy's nibs are not consistent. You may find certain EF's writing like true EF's while others may resemble fines, or fines resembling extra fines, etc. As LizEF said, could you not take it back to the store to swap the nib out and to test other extra fines?

Yes, there is written "EF" on the nib

Well, the pen writes this thick line even when writing using the "power of the gravitation"

I use Parker Quink Black.

Thanks for informations, I already e-mailed the seller (I bought it online) if there is any possibility of nib change. I am very curious to see their response.

I think you have nib that gas been marked incorrectly by the manufacturer. Here is my Safari EF and a Uni-ball Signo 0.7. I also have a Safari F and M and compared to the EF the size is progressively narrower/wider as expected.

You can search this forum for similar questions about Lamy nibs. They tend to be chunky.

I ride a recumbent, I play go, I use Macintosh so of course I use a fountain pen.

Your nib could just be WET, so the ink line is wider than normal.

I've physically measured a few Lamy nibs and they seem to fall into place.

  • EF = 0.025 in = 0.64mm
  • F = 0.028 - 0.030 in = 0.71 - 0.76mm
  • M = 0.031 in = 0.79mm
  • B = 0.049 in = 1.24mm

I thought I had measured more than one EF nib, but I can't measure right now, as I lost my caliper.

The Medium is rather close to the Fine. I suspect it is on the narrow side of the Medium range.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
