Well, My Vac 700 Broke

I just filled it up with Caran D'Ache Infinite Gray. It had just finished a bottle of Sailor Yama Dori, which took over a year to empty. I had been using it for a few days, went to take the cap off, and CRACK!

Not sure if I want to replace it or just be done with TWSBI. I'm not a fan of mailing stuff. I gave the brand a fair shot. Loved everything else about the pen.

Same thing happened to my Vac 700.

I emailed photos to Twsbi and they sent me a new cap for free - I had to pay the $5 shipping. And I got a free, mild lecture about over-tightening the cap :)

Not that my Vac 700 gets much use, even with a working cap - because I've never got the damned thing to put down ink reliably, sadly.

My Vac700 did just that last week. Replacement cap should be arriving today, just had to e-mail them.

I didn't think I was that rough with my pens but this keeps happening. I've been leaning towards keeping the TWSBI pens as non-traveling pens for a while.

I've got four TWSBIs - 2 Mini Diamonds, a 580 RG and a Mini Vac. The only one that hasn't had issues is the Mini Vac...so far. Both Diamonds have developed cracks in various places and the 580 RG developed the well documented peeling nib issue. All issues were resolved by TWSBI sending out replacement parts for shipping cost only, so I've no complaints on that score. It's simply the annoyance of having to go back to them every few months for a new bit of pen. I was dwelling on whether our relationship had run it's course. And then I saw they're bringing a new, blue Mini Diamond AL out. Bas***ds!!! :)

I have a Diamond 540 that, never inked, cracked in two places (section and cap) while stored in the original case. TWSBI replaced both recently for only $6 shipping.

A point of interest is that the replacement cap is slightly longer. I know this because it wouldn't fit back in original case with new cap so I compared them.

I still love TWSBI's having a Micarta and a Mini as well as the 540.

They are innovative and interesting due to design/development emphasis. And of course have great customer service.

I'd suggest getting another cap. If you end up not wanting the pen, please consider sending it to me for the TWSBI pen loaner program.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Create a Ghostly Avatar and I'll send you a letter. Check out some Ink comparisons: The Great PPS Comparison

Don't know where to start?  Look at the Inky Topics O'day.  Then, see inks sorted by color: Blue Purple Brown Red Green Dark Green Orange Black Pinks Yellows Blue-Blacks Grey/Gray UVInks Turquoise/Teal MURKY

same story here.

Now, with the new cap, I systematically hold the cap by the shine metal ring instead of by the translucent plastic while capping and uncapping. Less stress on the joint and longer cap-life I hope.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
