Vacumatic Matters

After I asked questions here in this network, I realized that Ebay would be a better choice rather than antique shops. But are those pens auctioned there are flexible? even if they are restored? even if they still have the golden arrow nib? just curious. :)

I'm not sure what you're asking but, if you want to know if Parker Vacumatic nibs are flexible, the answer is, "usually not." I'm inclined but hesitant to say "never."

Sounds like you are fixated on flex nibs but have little experience with fountain pens in general. You are apparently in Manila where there is s sizable pen community. You should seek out fellow users and attend s club meeting or event to connect with others.

You should assume that any pen found on eBay will need to be restored and that it is not going to have a flexible nib.

There are two rules regardingfkex nibs that have proven true over and over again.

A nib is more flexible when you are selling than when you are buying.

All nibs flex at least once, some better than others.

Agree, vacumatics rarely have flexible nibs.

Vacs don't have flexy nibs. You probably don't want one for daily writing.

BUUUUUUTTTT... You could try the flex nibs on a dip pen, Noodlers, or a vintage Waterman.

But Vacs are so daang purdy.... Doi... Saw 'em in real life a few times and my mouth still waters.........

NOW you want to buy a Vac from a good seller. Here are some recommendations. (No affiliation, yadayadayadablahblahblah, etcetc.)

These sellers have good stuff for reasonable prices. You can always, however, buy a used one and send it off if ya like.

If you want to make life easy contact Jose aka PenManila here and elsewhere on the internet. He is rather well known in having been featured in a feature story about pen collecting. Not to mention he is an all around good guy that someday I need to buy a drink.

Ha ha many thanks for that, FarmBoy. Yes, I've had and have even sold a few Vacs with flexible nibs, and I may have three or four left but will have to think long and hard before letting go of another one, given how difficult it's been to chase these down (really comes down to pure luck; if you amass 200 Vacs a few of them will be bound to have flexy nibs). Looking forward to that drink sometime ;)

I'll be happy to sit with the OP and play with some Vacs.

I have a vacumatic slender with perhaps double broad (stubbish) nib that flexes with almost no pressure at all. I am not sure if that would be called a true flexible nib, though.

Here is the pen:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
