Just received this pen this week: a Delta Dolcevita Oversize with Vermeil accents and Broad nib. Love the orange color.

This is a Markings Journal. Same form factor as a Moleskine but more fountain pen friendly at half the cost.

Here's a journal from ... well, I forget. Picked it up at Scriptus. Couple of Jinhao 159s on top.

fpn_1512861244__jinhao.jpg

The 159s are great pens, but I have mixed feelings about them - and about cheap Chinese pens in general. The pluses - I like a larger pen so the shape of the 159 suits me. The pen writes well and reliably, like most Jinhaos. Fit and finish are much better than you would expect in a $6 pen.

However, the test of use comes up short. I do not tend to carry any of my Jinhaos regularly. It's either a higher end pen, or an ebonite Ranga 3 with a Jowo nib from FPNibs (see first post in this thread). That Ranga totals about $60, so I admit the comparison is unfair.

Why so little love for the 159? Well, it tends to dry its converter fairly quickly. I find that really annoying. The nib works well, but is a characterless round nail. I tend to prefer something a bit more exotic. The general appearance (fat, colorful cigar) is amusing, but the details are a bit trashy. Finally, the weight is high for carrying in a shirt pocket. Not impossible but also not optimal. End result, I reach for something else.

Delta Dolcevita with a Clairefontaine Moulin Rouge.

That looks vibrant.

What nib is on your Delta Dolcevita?

Great pictures, Christof, and the journals are lovely. What is that first pen? I've never seen one quite like it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
