Recommended Posts

I open the cap of the safari and write with it but it fells scratchy and i see misaligned tines and i realign them and just start writing with very little pressure and the nib goes back to misaligned position the same way as before.

So how do i fix this? Exams are nearing and i dont have time to get a replacement nib.

Thank you for any help.

Remove the nib from the feed and check the tines under a loupe, or as we Indians call it, a magnifying glass and realign the tines with your fingers. A nib that hasn't been broken in yet, will spring back to the original position if adequate force is not applied. If it still doesn't work, I'd suggest buying some Vectors to last you through the exams and after the exams, buy a new nib. Disclaimer: you will void the warranty if you tinker with the nib. However, it's your pen! If you want to, you could shove a firecracker into your pen and watch the additional confetti go flying into the air, just remember you will be held responsible for the consequences.

Check the nib carefully. Stare at it from head-on and see if the tines are misaligned. If so, then correct. If it still doesn't work, maybe the tipping of your nib is rough, like very very rough, then polish it by drawing figure 8 on a brown paper bag with your normal angle and pressure, repeatedly. If this is the case, then the reason your Safari feels smooth when you tried realigning with your fingers is because extra ink builds up when you play with the nib. Or maybe it's a case of wrong paper and ink. You didn't specify what size the nib is, so I'm going to assume Fine. Buy some fountain pen friendly paper and write on it. If it feels smooth, then it probably was the paper. If not, get PR Tanzanite, the wettest of all the inks. Still nothing? It probably will be wise to get a new nib. All of this should be done after the exams.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
