Getting A Gift From Fontoplumo- Ups/customs Question

I just recently bought a Pelikan M800 (EF, Black) from Fontoplumo, Netherlands. It is a gift for a colleague and opted to ship it through UPS to Pune, India.

The tracking today has a message "Documentation required for import is incomplete or missing. We are working to obtain this information." + "Held in Warehouse". I had checked the customs webpage and assumed that gifts were customs exempt, and if at all I'll be charged, they will collect it at the time of delivery. There were other members who ordered it and received it either with no tariff or where it was collected at the time of delivery.

Planning to contact UPS tomorrow, but any pointers on this will be much appreciated. Do I need to contact UPS and send them some documents or will they reach out ?

Thanks.

The key phrase in your post is: I just recently bought a Pelikan M800. The fact that you have bought it and intend to give it as a gift to someone else doesn't make it a gift to import into India that has not been purchased. If Fontoplumo has received payment for it, then I'm afraid it's a normal merchandise import.

You better contact UPS. They may need ID proof and address proof or some kind of declaration from you for customs clearance. I had similar problems with pens send through DHL and I had to send copies of my ID proof. They did the customs clearance and collected the duty at the time of delivery.

Customs is crazy.

I have gotten more dire messages about refusing to accept at the border and then it arrives the next day.

My personal rule is the easier and quicker it took, the more likely I get burned for $30 from Canadian Customs 30 days later.

Thank you for all the comments and pointers :) I got my Pelikan M800 today after contacting UPS a few times, and paying a customs duty of ~11K :yikes: . Overall, it still came to be less than buying it from Indian vendors though.

Frank at Fontoplumo (no affiliation, just a happy customer) was great to deal with, as some of the other members have mentioned elsewhere.

My colleague was delighted with the surprise gift !

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
