Penbbs No. 218

Recommended Posts

This is a review of an ink made by Penbbs, the Chinese FPN equivalent. It claims to be a red ink with gold glitter. It seems more deep orange to me. Well behaved and waterproof, no sheen and little shading but a very nice ink. I'm quite tempted to filter out the particles. I bought this from a seller on eBay. The glitter has a tendency to clog a little but not as badly as my experience of Diamine's shimmer inks. I put this in a demonstrator which may have been a little foolhardy but no signs yet of staining. The ink pulls away from the inside to reveal a clearness. If I find it does stain I will update this thread later. Please note that the scans make it look much more red than it actually is. It's more like a burnt orange.

No problem. I just stumbled across it for a reasonable price on ebay and thought I'd give it a go. It would be a really excellent ink without the sparkles,

It look pretty. Thank you.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

  • 2 weeks later...

Resurrecting this to post a warning. I was filtering out a couple of Diamine Shimmertastics with a coffee filter paper and decided that this Penbbs burnt orange would be a hundred times better without gold gloop - which it is. When I rinsed out the bottle in the sink the gold stuck to the metal sink and needed a really hard scrub to lift it. I thought I better post a warning just in case someone else buys it and puts it in a good pen. I have the glittery infused one in a Twsbi Eco so thankfully that can be taken apart to be cleaned.

How about an up-close writing sample with the "de-glittered" version of the ink?

I'm thinking about de-glittering some of my Herbin Rouge Hematite as well because it just makes such a goopy mess around the nib and feed on my Jinhao X450 (the only pen I'm brave enough to put it in since the red stains so bad). Coffee filters are extremely useful!

Very ice review, for a nice ink. Thank you.

I like it.

Thank you for the warning. It is always good to know.

I join TruthFil for the request of a writing sample without the glitter.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
