Hi All,

Recently I've collected a Sheaffer Legacy Heritage FP ,Black lac body,Palladium cap,Gold trim,18k inlaid M nib.The pen is used and still in excellent condition, but there is a small hair line crack on the inner cap.Though the cap is functioning perfectly and a clear click sound can be heard while posting the cap.Still I would like to know if the crack might cause any problem in future. Please help. Thanks.

It shouldn't make any difference, other than the possible tendency for the nib to dry out more quickly, and I'm not sure that it will do that. I've seen that on a number of pens, but haven't heard any complaints from clients who send the pens to me for service. I doubt that you will find a replacement inner cap now that the Sheaffer brand is owned by Cross.

Ron Z,

Thanks for your response.I 've noticed no such nib drying out problem and the pen is a smooth writer. Actually the cracked inner cap surprised me because the pen was almost new and a hairline crack in that position is quite odd.

I have this problem and my cap doesn't seat as well. I was going to tape it as I have done with Waterman Man 200 inner caps, but I can't get the inner cap out.

It's just a press fit. To my knowledge, no adhesive was ever used.

Unlike the Waterman caps where the clutch is molded into the cap, I don't believe that the inner cap on a Legacy has anything to do with the cap seating well or staying closed on the pen. The clutch mechanism is at the barrel end of the section - either pressure tabs or a rigid 0-ring depending on the model, which grips the edge end of the cap. I'm not sure what the problem is, but it's not the inner cap.

I have the same problem with my Legacy Heritage too.

The inner cap is cracked.

Anyone know if it is any issue to replace it?

Don't worry about it. :) Unless you particularly want to take it out, and stick some tape on it, because you won't get a new one. :(

Hey! mine is exactly the same, is more a cut than a ripped plastic, i think is designed this way to post the cap on the correctly.

I've had seven legacies come and go (I've kept my two favorites) and they have all had the crack there. I think it is designed this way, perhaps to aid with fitting it into the correct position in the cap.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
