Is This A Waterman Ripple Or Woodgrain Pattern?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I'm slowly trying to collect all of the colours that Waterman 52V pens were made from (currently missing cardinal [with pocket clip] & rose ripple), but I'm unsure whether the pen I have below is a Red ripple or a woodgrain model.

I would love to hear what a few other people think it is.

Thanks in advance! :)

Thank you both for your help.

I have attached a couple of additional photos showing both sides of the barrel below.

Hmmm difficult.

The colours looks very close and the patina to the nickel plated hardware looks identical.

Look very close at the worn engraving because Ripple is sometimes included.

Just had a close look - no sign of the word 'ripple' anywhere.

Sorry if the pictures aren't the best, but all of the fittings on the pen are gold plated (9ct band).

I compared my ripple with the photos, in which the barrel pattern does not look at all the same. I am close to saying frankenpen except the section is ripple.

Helpful photos, maybe. These are of a model 52.

At this point I think that B_P's pen combines a woodgrain barrel with ripple cap and section. Alternatively, that is how they made the V models?

I haven't got the full set yet, but here's a picture of my 'V' sized pens so far:

Going left to right, we have

1.) 15 BCHR (Didn't mean to include this in the photo!)

2.) 54V BCHR

3.) 52V Woodgrain/ripple as discussed in this post. I think I'm going to settle and call it a ripple :)

4.) 52V Olive Ripple

5.) 52V BCHR

6.) 52V Blue Ripple

7.) 52 1/2V Cardinal

8.) 52 1/2V Red Ripple

I'll make sure I upload a proper photo of the 52V collection when I finally complete it! :)

Fantastic progress & a great picture.

I see you might well be in search of the elusive Rose Ripple 52V.

I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of my 1st Waterman pen ever.

The 52V Olive Ripple.

I also found this great picture from Xof7200

The ripple colors are the same but his pens are model 94

Actually, I change my mind :) I think praxim is correct. I just got a 52 1/2 for restoration. I'm pretty sure its woodgrain based on my research. It look just like the barrel of your pen. Also, when compared to the ripple design, the woodgrain looks quite different. Your barrel looks like its woodgrain with a ripple cap.

Here's a question for all you guys with the ripple 52s, does it say 'ripple' somewhere on the barrel (as per Richardspens)? If yes, then I think that's an easy distinguisher between the two. Though, from close side-by-side visual comparison, it seems like the two designs are quite clearly distinguishable anyway.

Thanks!

I looked for "ripple" on mine without spotting it, although all lettering / numbering on it is quite worn. I need good magnification merely to identify the brand and number.

The imprint on my 52V is also worn, but yes, it says " RIPPLE ".

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
