Black Ink Coming Out Of My Pen

Recommended Posts

Just purchased a Metropolitan from Goulet. I've never used black ink with this pen. I used one blue cartridge, then started using Noodlers Cayenne on Thursday. It's been writing wonderfully. The Cayenne coming out of the nib is consistent and gorgeous. I did notice a little bit of creep, but not enough to worry.

Today when I uncapped the pen it had larger spots of black ink on the nib and feed. I wiped them off, and used the pen without problem. Just now the same thing happened, plus there's black ink inside the lid. It still writes orange though.

Where is the black ink coming from?

I'm wondering if the ink is spraying off the nib into the cap (can happen with a tight snap, or if the pen bounces around, falls, etc.) and dries enough there for the ink to look black. Have you stuffed a tissue, paper towel, or similar down in the cap to get the excess out? If not, that could be where the rest is coming from. It also wouldn't hurt to wash out the cap with plain water, then dry it a bit before re-capping.

You did clean the blue out before you inked up with the Cayenne, right?

It seems unlikely it came with black ink in there - you would have noticed it while using the blue cartridge. A reaction between the two inks, or drying & darkening of Cayenne seems more likely.

Make sure you give the pen a good flush. I typically get nib creep with Noodler's ink, and I accept that as part of the experience. Make sure you dry out the inside of your cap, be gentle with your pen, and see if you have different results.

Hello Tiabih,

In addition to the good council above; does anyone else have access to pen? Someone, (like a child or the child-minded), who might have dipped the nib in black ink?

I'm thinking of a curious child or a juvenile, practical joker.

Sounds like some left over blue ink in the pen mixed with the cayenne. Give the pen a good flush and re-ink. You should be fine.

Thanks for the great suggestions!

No one else has access to the pen. I think it's a combination of all of the above though. The Noodlers does seem to have more nib creep and probably is spraying on the inside of the cap. The Metropolitan does have a big snap when capping. I did use a tissue to wipe out the inside of the the cap, and there was a decent amount of "black" ink in there. I also think the blue mixed with the Cayenne to cause the black. When I switch inks again I'll make sure to give it a better flush.

Thanks again!!

Someone somewhere somehow used black in it and yeah it can stick around until (as advised here) you give a really good flush.

Sadly my pens never leak money...

Don't forget to flush the cap with water too - a tissue will get wet out, but if anything's dried in there, you'll need water to loosen it up and get it out.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
