What Did I Just Buy?

I just won this pen on ebay a few days ago and was wondering if you all could tell me anything about it, seeing as its my first Esterbrook and I have no knowledge of them whatsoever. I only paid $15 for it, so hopefully I got a good deal. I'll quote the seller's description and include the only pics I have. Any info is appreciated!

I was debating buying that one. It's one of the "new" Esterbrooks. They are nothing even close to the old ones. I have no idea how that one will write, or the quality. To me, it looks like an old Venus cartridge fill pen.

So, while you may like the pen, you are NOT getting an Esterbrook in the classic sense. You really want to get something like an Esterbrook J with the Re-New nib. That will start you on the path to ruin, and love of a true classic working man's pen.

Looks like a hooded nib pen. The best thing about the old Esterbrooks was the nib choice. Except for Safari pump dillers and M2s I thought the pens felt cheap, which they were, and that made them so universally available.

I hope you like the box. If they are still using the original boxes then you will really like the box. Everyone knows how much I liked the box on mine.

Do post a picture of the box when you get it.

Haha, I'll be sure to include pics when it comes in. Might even do a small review on it (the pen too, not just the box) depending on how much time I have.

A couple of summers ago I actually checked out the "new" Esterbrooks at their table at DCSS. The one I picked up was apparently a metal bodied pen (likely brass), because it was fairly heavy for its size -- too heavy for me.

So, Farmboy -- don't sugar coat it! Tell us how you *really* feel about the box.... B)

When it comes to the box sugar doesn't cut it and I use saccharine.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
