Pif - Estebrook J Black 9668 Nib

This is my first time doing this. I recently came into a few Esterbrooks, courtesy of another FPN member (who wishes to remain anonymous). Among the request for accepting these pens was that at least one of them go to another FPN member. More than one will make its way to a new owner here.

This is the first, and it is really the nicest one of the lot. As I finished this one, I realized that *I* don't even have a black one in my own collection, much less this nice.

This one is really a beautiful, black pen. It's remarkably clean, both inside and out. There aren't many signs of age or use, and it just gleams. The inside was so clean that the original "Esterbrook" sac was still there, and intact. You will get that with the pen. The nib is the 9668 Firm Medium, and it writes solid and smooth. It's going to be in my pocket for a few days. B)

So...drop your name in the thread over the next week. Next Sunday, Jan 29, I will pick a random name from the list (using a spreadsheet and random command line), and someone will have a new pen!

One more pic.

I should add (after noting, and remembering WHERE we all live) that I can cover up to $10 for shipping, so I hope the international folks won't mind working with me on this.

I'd like to enter this PIF. I've never used a vintage fountain pen, and this sounds like a good opportunity to try one. Thanks for the offer.

I've heard much about Esterbrook but have never even seen one in real life. I'd love to be considered and am willing to help with postage, if needed. Thank you for this PIF.

I'd love to be included, and wouldn't mind a bit helping with the shipping across the ocean.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
