Iroshizuku Shimbashi-Iro

I'm looking for a doppleganger of Iro's Shimbashi-iro and would very much appreciate your help. I've tried a few pale blues out from my own collection and haven't come close to what it might be. Basically I love the soft look of the Iro special edition colour and would love to find a match because I don't want to pay $90 for the bottle of ink and $117 shipping on top - which is what it is the asking price on ebay currently is. They have even sold a bottle at that price - mad! So, can you help me find a match for this ink that is affordable and a sensible price?

Well, I thought that Diamine Aqua might have been close but it's far too blue. I have Ama-iro, but it's actually quite a long way off from it. I thought Diamine's Steel Blue might be close-ish, but no. Kobe's Marchias Blue is kind of getting there, but much too deep a colour. I asked on a different thread if Caran Dache's Hypnotic turquoise might have been a match, but someone who has it was able to let me know it was not. I think it will likely have a doppleganger in some sort of turquoise, but I can;t think what it might be.

Have you tried diluting inks you've tried but thought were too dark/saturated?

My pens: Penny the Penmanship, Dot the Metropolitan, Pallas the Parallel, Neoma the High Ace Neo, Petra the Petit1, Calliope the Kakuno (Also, a Sheaffer No-Nonsense)

My bottles of ink: Sailor Epinard & Ultramarine; Mysterious Blue (Wishlist: Oku Yama)

I used whiterabbitexpress and just used the links from the Amazon.jp website.

Sadly it is all sold out from that source and Rakuten does;t have it either.

I don't think either of these come close as far as I know

Then maybe Sailor Yuki-Akari or Bungubox June Bride?

Where do you live? I can send you a 2mL sample, but you'll have to pay for shipping. I'm in Canada, so if you're here or even in the states it should be pretty cheap just to send a bubble wrap envelope.

Thanks. I live in Ireland, so unfortunately I think the postage may be high. At least, I think international post from Canada is. If not pm me please. I'd be happy to pay a reasonable postage rate

Uhh, well it looks like it would be around $11 for a "small international packet". But the website says that's an estimate and it may differ at the post office. I'm also not sure if that includes the cost of the actual envelope or not...

I guess it depends how desperate you are for a couple drops of ink :P

Hi, thanks for the offer, but looking at samples of the Iro and June Bride it looks like June Bride might be the closest thing I'll get to it. I may as well spend the money on that.

I read a review of the Shimbashi-Iro that said it was a more traditional Japanese color so I figured something from Sailor or that Sailor makes (Bungubox) might be similar.

Yes, thank you. It looks like it might be close enough.

I was wondering how close Yuki-Akari was, myself.

From the scans I have seen online Yuki seems to lack that greenish element and appears a little less luminous. But it really isn't at all easy to tell from a scan on a monitor

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
