My First Sailor

Purchased my first Sailor pen last Friday from Anderson Pens at the Philadelphia Pen Show. It has lived in my shirt pocket for the past six days and has quickly become my favorite pen in my small collection. The Naginata Togi MF nib is outstanding.

I'm a big fan of Sailor, I've got two 1911L's and a Pro Gear Realo, with a Pro Gear Classic on the way.

The three that I've got all have M/F nibs, the one in the mail will have a .6mm cursive italic.

I've not seen a Sailor pen yet. Heard that out of the big three Japanese pen brands they are generally the smallest in form factor. Is this true then?

Back to the pens methinks! I looked at Sailors on J-Subculture but bought a Platinum Century instead as I loved the Bourgogne burgundy resin. The Sailors were more expensive like for like and in more conservative colours but I would like to try one. The consensus I get reading on Japanese pens is they tend to have a bit of graphite pencily feedback. Not scratchy but you can feel the paper. That is the case with the Platinum. I cannot comment on the Sailor pens until I have tried one. That at $300 is out of my price range but the Sailor Profit is doable at around £80 shipped from J-Subculture. My Platinum was about £60 shipped: still considerably less than the £109 that Cult Pens charge here in the UK.

 

I would like to try a Pilot at some point too but the Platinum seemed the best option into higher end Japanese pens and I have to watch my pennies right now

That looks so fine! I wrote with a Sailor ribbed pen at Anderson's table at the Ohio show last November and came so close. I haven't forgotten it, and it's on my short list. Maybe at LA next month?

Nice! Even though I've had a KOP for a while, I don't really know much about other Sailor fountain pens. Will have to investigate further. This looks a bit like Montblanc WE Virginia Woolf- in a good way.

Pretty nice looking pen! I'm glad you are happy with it and the way it writes.

 

I've slowly become a fan of Sailor nibs over other Asian pens that seem to have a bit more flex and softer touch. It took some adjustment for me to find the right pen. Since I don't care to write with my pens posted, I find the pro gear a little too short for my hand. The 1911 are just a hair longer, and perfect for me in slim, large, or Realo. No KOP yet. ($800. Just doesn't make sense to me.)

 

My latest sailor fetish however is for their broad nibs. These are by no means broad writers with thick ink lines. Mine write more like a Pelikan 14k fine nib. They are juicy and feel smoother with less feedback than the other Sailor nibs. The increase in lubrication from the extra ink, and a larger sweet spot, make for a really nice writing experience.
