I'll give it a go :-) I'll write up a few lines of each & stick them in the suitcase. That big old hole in the ozone layer over Aus, and the resultant maxi strength UV rays, will definitely put them to the test! What is your recommended methodology Amber?

I suggest you fold a sheet of paper in half, labeling one side "Control" and the other "Test." Write the samples all the way across it, with at least the name of each ink on each side, and using something totally fade-proof (like pencil or india ink), note the paper and the date you plan to hang it in the window. Then tear it in half. Put the "Control" side in a safe dark place, and the "Test" side in the window, somewhere that won't put shadows across only part of it. I used a north-facing window (I'm in the US) to avoid this issue.

ETA: I did this once; when I finished, I hosted the images on imgur.

Migo, do you think Canyon Rust is more of a true burgundy than Napa burgundy?

I'm looking for a true burgundy.

Canyon Rust is not a burgundy, at least to my eyes. It is a red-brown.

#380 is Canyon Rust.

Errant Smudge will be sharing it with us soon, I hope.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Manalto, thank you for the vocabulary. I always enjoy learning new words. #374 is a wonderful (though not cheap) ink from Rohrer and Klinger, Super 5 Dublin.

Oh, and Canyon Rust was darker once the ink started flowing.

Yes, I will! I definitely have some experience with this ink to report, but a few more experiments first.

Reposting some Monteverde ink swab samples I made at the LA Pen Show this past Sunday.

This purple and orange sheet was made by another conference attendee, who had a lighter touch with the swabs.

Thank you, Errant Smudge! The swabs are invaluable for us who don't have access to physical stores that stock these inks.

Seeing 'Canyon Rust' in this darker iteration reminds me of the selenium toner used to stabilize black and white photographs. Beautiful and subtle. Has its behavior/performance been discussed? (I'm feeling an urge to get some.)

ETA: I read previous comments that say Errant Smudge (best screen name on FPN) will report on 'Canyon Rust'. I'm eager to hear the report!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
