To Post Cap, Or Not To Post?

I never said that it was more important than writing or balance.

A well designed pen will write well, be balanced properly and have the ability to post.

No problem regarding your first point. I did have a smiley on my 'new criterion'. :)

The second, though, seems to have a logical problem. If, all other things being equal, a pen is perfectly balanced unposted, then by definition it will be unbalanced when posted, so why would one then post? If on the other hand it is a requirement that a pen be postable, then the demand is that a pen must be designed as unbalanced until posted.

If your personal preference is for the second of those, then I conclude that you place a priority on posting over production of a balanced pen by any other means, hence my earlier comment.

No rights or wrongs here; I am exploring the implications of some views.

As before, my personal balance preference leads to unposted pens and to designs whose balance suits that, with a couple of vintage pens requiring posting owing to lack of length; and I own a pen specifically designed not to be posted, in fact unpostable.

In that case, I guess it's up to the user to adjust balance to suit them by posting or not posting.

There aren't many commercially produced pens (in fact I know of none) that cannot be posted.

The non postable pens all seem to be customs, which makes me think the person who made it didn't design it well.

Of course there are exceptions, where a maker may have forgone the ability to post because of a stylistic choice (such as a perfectly cylindrical pen for example).

When I see a pen that looks like it should post but doesn't, I think it's a bad design.

There are other ways of adjusting balance without messing up the ability to post the cap.

I grew up in the standard and medium-long pen days....of posting.

To me those sized pens are balanced posted......so are the long thin pens, the Snorkel or the P-45.

However most of the posters grew up with fat clunky Large pens so think them normal....and are to them. So posting is more alien, in those pens are not balanced posted.

What irritates me is folks that refuse to post a standard or medium-long pen for religious reasons, and then have the nerve to complain bitterly that Standard pens are too small for them. ................when they are longer than an unposted Large pen.

Oh, well using the forefinger up method of grasping a fountain pen....I find an un-posted Large pen to be....too Small!. :yikes: :P

Sometimes I have to switch back to the death grip Classic Tripod. :(

My Lamy Joy has that.

The others are harder to find.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
