Best Of 2016

Happy New Year to all my FPN friends - may your nib never run dry.

What was the good and bad of 2016 for you and wish for 2017 (FPN wise)? Here are mine.

Best:

Discovered Nock products. Love their cases and cards. Use them every day now, especially the Hightower bifold.

Discovered Muji loose leaf refills and they are consistently good and very inexpensive.

Worst:

I am a huge Lamy fan but the LX was a big disappointment. Bought two from different suppliers and the nibs in both were awful. Just not worth the premium price.

2017 wish list:

To find an A4 and A5 leather 2 ring binder that is affordable and corporate.

My best was having bought all the pens I really wanted (& could afford) in previous years, this year was enjoying more of the many inks I have discovered here. I also acquired three new friends from sharing those inks & found that the sharing of those with other users made this year much richer than my earlier time spent chasing pens.

The worst was discovering the beautiful MB Golden Yellow Ink was "not as it should be." The entire situation of inquiry, attempts @ replacement for the ink were equally as unpleasant as finding out an ink you had enjoyed was dangerous to use in your pen. AND if THAT is the "WORST" thing I can remember, it was a pretty ____ GOOD year!

I continue to be grateful for my discovery of the resources available here; I thank each member & the persons behind the scenes who make it possible.

Best: A year of reaping the rewards from previous years of researching, hunting, and acquiring great pens, inks, and papers. All thanks to this community at FPN. I have thoroughly enjoyed the respite.

And that KWZ inks remain a stable source for iron gall inks.

Worst: Missing out on some great Sailor limited edition or otherwise unobtainable inks that can't be had easily in the USA. Bummer. BUT I was too busy with the above to be too terribly pained in missing out.

Wish List: Ah, yes, that notebook so coveted https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/316913-national-record-books/

Hm. There was a lot of "Best" for me in 2016:

Acquired (and love) a fauxdori standard-sized Travelers Notebook with Tomoe River inserts.

Joined the Letter Writers Alliance, which is wonderfully whimsical.

Lamy Dark Lilac ink :D

Worst:

Didn't love J. Herbin Lie de Thè.

Wish List:

A Goulet nib-tuning kit, so I can get my pile of Sheaffer NoNonsense nibs smooth, properly-aligned, and free-flowing.

More Tomoe River. All the Tomoe River.

Best: my Midori Traveling notebook is growing on me.

Worst: a store was closing out Moleskine notebooks. I bought too many. Tooooo many. I still like them to some degree but my hoard of notebooks of all types exceeds what I could probably ever use.

Ooh! Another "best", and how could I forget:

The re-release of some much-loved Sailor Jentle inks. (I was reminded when I unpacked the bottles of Kin-mokusei and Rikyu-cha that arrived in the mail yesterday.)

I have an expensive habit - if I buy a notebook I really like I usually go back and buy a stack of them. Last count I have over 300 various notebooks. Way too many and, like you, more than I could possibly use for the rest of my life. This is the year I buy with my brain and not my heart. Of course, that doesn't count if I find a ripper buy.

The above is me for sure. I should be ashamed...but I am not. LOL

.

Worst: I'm afraid to count all the notebooks. Spiral bound notebooks are not figured in either. Misplaced a half used sarasa pen. CAN'T find it. I only have 137 more just like it. Art supplies and sketch pads fill large bin boxes. I could be on TV soon: the WORST notebook, art supply and disposable pen and pencil collection ever revealed to the public. 5 more Midori fillers are on the way.

BEST: love all of it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
