Found An Old Waterman - Need Help Identifying It!

Recommended Posts

My grandmother had this old Waterman, which we believed once belonged to one of my uncles when they were still in school.

The pen is boxed, and would be perfect - except for the grip section, which is discolored and, sadly, cracked to the point it won't hold the nib in place if I try to write with it.

Does anyone of you recognise the model, and know if and where I could get a new grip section to make it shine again?

I'm on mobile so I have some difficulty with the formatting, but here's the link to the pics on Imgur: imgur.com/fpngallery/ZwzW1

Thanks a lot guys!

For those that cannot see the pen, just one image (it has the Master section)

I would say it's from the Master era of mid to late 80's and may even be a Master

You will have great difficulty acquiring a new section so will have to look out for a complete pen. Also look out for Super Master which has the same section.

Here is the Super Master.

My only concern being the used cartridge shown. It is a CF yet the Master range used standard 23 as shown in my 1988 catalogue containing the Super Master range.

You, sir, are a hero.

Using this reply as a reference, I dug into the older Master series pens - and I found this:

This article is about the Master production run of the late '70s - different finish, but same design, and same clip style - and even the same discoloration defect in the plastic section!

Still, I'm going to wait for Waterman's reply on that - these pens are sorta cheap, but maybe they'll have some bottom drawer parts, who knows? :D

As far as the cartridge goes, it was actually inside the pen when I opened it. There are traces of ink in it, and there was some ink in the nib and feed, so it most definitely worked on the pen. Maybe mine is a mysterious hybrid? :P

Dirck...or rather Ernst will probably pop by now.

Watermans drawer will have to be very deep. My thoughts are they will still be chuckling or saying 'what's a Master'.

Ahah, fair point

Holidays and all that-- sorry for the silence. I don't have much to contribute other than to warn that the sections of the Master and the Super Master are, alas, not interchangeable, just very very similar to look at.

To me, the cartridge in the picture looks like the 23 (which may be more properly a "Maxima" if a single source I've stumbled on is to be believed). But I'm still partially blind from seasonal over-eating, so I may be misinterpreting the image.

Ravensmarch Pens & Books
It's mainly pens, just now....

Oh, good heavens. He's got a blog now, too.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
