Montblanc Red Gold 149 Obbb

Which one is which?

Gaius Maecenas is the OB, 146 gold is the Dan smith OB

My question also. The Maecenas is obviously much wider, looking like an OBB if the 14K (I assume 149?) is OB. Also, what tip size/type was original to the reground nib?

Most importantly, how does Nibsmith's grind compare to the factory? Closely similar in feel? Or if different, in what ways?

Original 146 14k nib was a medium, but when the reshape happens the line width grows. Both have a VERY similar line width.

Nibsmith's re grind is sharper, an oblique cursive italic, so it is just as thick on the "fat" side, and a lot thinner/ crispier on the "thin side". Both have the same angle (i measured it to be 15 degrees), but Nib Smith made it to my pen/writing angle and so it writes SUPERBLY well (for me)

Glad you're enjoying your nibs. We couldn't keep ALL the fun to ourselves.

It was actually your comment about obliques not necesarily being for "people who rotate their pens" that made me give them a try. Now i'm in love...

I second you Reed, also, i was hoping for writing samples of that pen on instagram, glad I found one in here! FPN for the win!

Cheers,

GP you are a tease without giving scale. Did you go skeleton mad and get the Blue Hour or have you shown a modicum of constraint and gotten the Legrand Blue Hour OBB?

Reed Thoughts:

Sorry to butt in again, but was your 146 M regrind made crisper than the stock oblique at your request, or is that just the way Dan always grinds them?

Also, were the sky-blue and green writing samples above done with the Mycaenas and 146 respectively, as seems to be implied?

No worries! Maecenas has kon peki, and the 146 has Irish green.

The maecenas just returned from a nib exchange from fine to an oblique broad.

The 146 started life as a medium nib, but I sent to to Dan to convert it to an oblique cursive italic (I love stubs and cursive italics). I asked for the oblique angle to be 15 degrees (it can be anything from 15 to 45) as 15 seems to be what montblanc uses.

After the re grind the surface area in contact with paper gets larger than that of the traditional medium nib (by a whole lot), as originally only the tip of the round tip was touching. And it gets even larger when going to an oblique (simple geometry).

Anyhow, because of the nature of the cursive italic oblique it's similar, but lines are thinner on the thin side, while just as broad on the other way... And because it was made for my pen writing angle it writes just perfectly smooth for me.

Edit, that's Kon Peki? Wow, I'm really looking forward to the delivery later this week with that ink in it now. Absolutely infatuating blue!

What is this "restraint" you speak of?

What is this "restraint" you speak of?

It is a bit of a foreign concept for me, much like eating healthy and exercise. I understand it from an academic perspective, but not from an emotional one.

Enjoy your new treasure. I have been going back and forth with picking up the BH skeleton but never got over the hump to acquisition.

So i assume that is O3B then?

It is, indeed.

I offloaded the vast majority of my collection to acquire these. Major kudos to Bryant at Chatterley who made it all possible.

I'll post the entire saga of the Skeleton hunt when I'm not doing double duty between hurricane repairs and getting my business partner pulled together for her first overseas conference.

~ These broad-nibbed fountain pens keep getting bigger and better.

They make a little Pug puppy want to do likewise.

There's just no good way to share a virtual cuddle with a puppy. Sigh.

Wish he could visit via the internet. My neighborhood has an awesome fenced dog park for hours of pelting after balls and toys.Plus a bench for humans to sit and wield their pens in comfort when the dogs outrun them.

Yes sir, Lucky Orange. If you put enough ink down it is a pleasant ink to see.

Your handwritten post in Montblanc Lucky Orange is especially useful.

Thank you for the comparison between rotated and normal.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
