Q Comparing Nis To Faux Penman Sapphire #10

OCArt

Recommended Posts

I have enjoyed using the formula for Noodler's Inkyman Sapphire for the last several months. I always have a pen loaded with this ink and I'm very pleased with the color.

In November, I saw a post by DCWaites with a formula for Faux Penman Sapphire #10 made with Iroshizuku inks. I recently discovered Iroshizuku inks and have become a great fan-- I was surprised to find that I adored Yama-Budo a color that I wouldn't normally consider.

I wonder DCWaites or any other users would be kind enough to share their thoughts on the merits of the two formulas?

I haven't tried Noodler's Inkyman Sapphire. I was happy with the FPS #9 mix without extra water. It compared favourably against my bottle of PPS.

OK, I have just done a quick comparison with FPS #10, NIS and the original PPS.

On poorer paper (Lihit Lab unlined binder refill)

  • all three inks look virtually identical
  • they all spread to the same degree (a bit, but not a lot)
  • they all bleed through to the same degree (not much, just tiny dots)
  • there is little shading visible

On good paper (Kokuyo Campus binder refill)

  • all three inks look virtually identical
  • there is no spreading
  • there is no bleeding
  • PPS and FPS#10 show a bit more shading than NIS

In summary

  • all three inks are virtually identical in looks and behaviour
  • NIS is the cheapest per ml
  • your results will depend on your pen, your paper and your lighting. Inks will look different under natural sunlight, incandescent, fluorescent and LED lighting. FPS#10 may show a purply tinge under some lights due to the rose dye used to make Asa-Gao.

Edited to add

  • FPS #9 looks a little duller and a tad more greenish than the others
  • it bleeds through more than the others on the Lihit Lab paper
  • with the original recipe (water added) it is the cheapest of all the inks considered.
  • FPS #9 is usually the ink I put into a new pen because it looks good, it behaves well and, because of the low dye concentration, it is quite safe.

David, you really are the great PPS expert.

OC, I'm thrilled to learn that others enjoy my ink-cidental discovery.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I don't have the components to make NIS, and am not sure how easy it is to get the correct version of the purple ink, as I remember some people didn't get the right shade.

Living in the UK I don't want to risk getting the wrong bottle. I suppose I could always wait until I'm in the US though. :)

You probably already know this but FPS#9 is made with Diamine inks that I imagine are easy for you to get in the UK.

OOPs. sorry Chrissy I just read that you are already using FPS#9.

When I ordered mine from Goulet's, I asked them to make sure I got a purply bottle. Which they did.

Honestly, the trouble they go to just to make a customer happy. :) :) :bunny01: :bunny01: :bunny01: :notworthy1: :notworthy1: :notworthy1:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
