Good evening to every one of you!

My name's David, 23, I love tortoises (don’t ask), and I'm from a little city called Montreux in Switzerland (maybe you've heard of one of the most famous music festival in the world, well, I work for it :P ).

At the age of 20, I made a big step in my academic cursus and my father offered me the best congratulation gift possible: a Caran d'Ache Léman.

Here's what I'm talking about:

I fell in love at first sight. I remember opening the box, staring at the fountain pen for a solid 5 minutes, I saw that strange syringe kind of thing, learned that it was called a converter and I tried it as soon as I got home.

Because of that event (or thanks to), I've become a pen addict, even though I'm from a middle-class family and I'm still a student. Yep... fountain pens are a beautiful hobby, but beautifully expensive as well (yes, even for a swiss guy, let's kill all those stereotypes immediately -_- ).

My second passion, and you're going to be happy about this one, is photography, which means that I'm putting a lot of effort in taking great quality pictures with as much details as possible. That's also why I'm gonna be using image hosting website instead of the forum itself to share my pictures. :)

Every birthday or at Christmas, I ask for only one gift (I let you guess what) and I occasionally jump on very good opportunities on our local ‘eBays’. A lot of people around here have got old fountain pens, often inherited from grandparents, and they try to sell them at low prices on those platforms. This is how I acquired a few Montblanc pens, that I’m going to be presenting on the forum very soon.

Here's a teaser:

Anyway, I’m happy to join the family and hope we’ll have some interesting discussions around our common passion!

Cheers,

MrTortoise

PS: Sorry if you see some grammatical mistakes or weird expressions, I'm not too bad in English, but I'm still learning! Also, if you see something weird, please do not hesitate to quote it and tell me how to improve. Really. Don't be shy, it's for the greater good !

Greetings and a warm welcome. I've visited Montreux many times as we come to Switzerland each fall to hike and enjoy the beautiful country. Since you're involved in music and photography here is a photo I took of the statue of Freddie Mercury.

Welcome, David !

I like vintage fountain pens, too. Some of mine belonged to parents and relatives, and were given to me because I can care for them.

German, French, Romanisch. English is not even one of Switzerland's official languages. Your English is quite good. Thank you.

Wow! Those are some very beautiful, and incredible photographs. You aren't kidding about the detail. Those photos at original size make the nibs so large I kept expecting I'd see my reflection in them. Can't wait to see more. Got me drooling already. :puddle:

Welcome aboard!

I'll dig with it.

You forgot Italian ! Haha. Switzerland is one of the most multicultural country in the world, and yet there's still a lot of racism... But thanks for the compliment ! :D

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
