Robert Oster Signature Ink Fire & Ice

This is a review of George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire Robert Oster's Fire & Ice.

 

It's a blue green. This kind of colour is really hard to capture. They usually come out bluer in my photos or scans. And lighting affects our perception of this kind of colour too. In my room with 4000K light, it looks very blue, like a turquoise. Near my window under a blue sky I see a very green colour. So you might need to refer to the comparison and your experience of the other inks to get a better idea of the colour.

Interesting color. I would have agreed with vismamitra, but the ink has caught my attention somehow (I said the same thing about Edelstein Aquamarine: "Not my color" -- until I got a free bottle in this year's Pelikan Hub, and I found that I didn't absolutely hate the ink.

Although I fear that in this case one would need a really wide italic nib (or have exquisite penmanship, or both) to really bring out the best in this ink.

I mainly use EF & F nibs and I get good colour variation, shading & sheen (paper dependent) from this ink.

I don't have a problem with the name. The ice is the blue and the fire is the deep reddish sheen, which I get in abundance on the right paper. I think there are inks that have much more inappropriate names. :-)

It reminds me of Montblanc's Honore de Balzac (for its shading).

Hmm, I wonder how that looks next to Waterman's Inspired Blue. In all my ink tests, I haven't seen anything quite the same as that.

I'm curious about this ink, too. Is it sort of a cross between Diamine Majestic Blue and Sailor Yama-dori? I have both of those, and they show a lot of red sheen. I probably don't need another blue-with-red-sheen flashy ink, but I do love the name. As someone else noted, I see the main color blue/teal as the ice and the red sheen as the fire.

 

On a side note, my Yama-dori looks very, very dark from some of my pens, to the point that it doesn't show off its colors very well. Is this common with it?

Got a sample of this and wrote a few pages with it. I could not get that red sheen to come out of my writing.

Thanks to Lgsoltek, who used this ink in a CRV, I had to get a bottle, and I am very pleased! Unlike others, I do prefer green-blues to flat out greens, so this is a perfect color for me. And the red sheen is a great extra feature.

 

 

The sheen is not as consistent as, say, Noodler's Naples Blue, Akkerman's Shocking Blue, or Sailor's Souten, but noticeable on paper like Tomoe River.

I bought this ink, and have been somewhat disappointed. The sheen is far less dramatic than even easily-attainable Sailors (eg. Yama Dori), and the blue lacks both punch and depth. It is also very, very dry.

 

If you want a really sheen-tastic blue blue, try Hougado Bocchan blue.

I lke this ink a lot. I agree about the sheen being very minimal with normal writing, but I just love the colour.

I couldn't agree more. The color is terrific, and it's what attracted me first to the ink. However, the sheen, on good paper, is not minimal. At least not when used in a fairly wet vintage Eclipse pen:
