Hello From Upstate N. Y. Pelikan Fan

Hello! I'm a college professor: I teach medieval English and Scandinavian literature at a small liberal arts college in upstate New York.

I have been a Pelikan fan since the late 1980s when I lived in NYC. My first husband introduced me to fountain pens, and as soon as I held a Pelikan fountain pen, I was hooked. I got that first Pelikan from the Fountain Pen Hospital. We made a special trip downtown just to visit that store (I honestly can't remember how we came to hear of it -- remember those old, pre-internet days?), and I was entranced by the beauty of the fountain pens (and not just the Pelikans). So my husband bought me a Pelikan, the plain black 400 with a 14K broad nib. I don't remember the year, but I later noticed it said "West Germany" on the cap. (Something I learned about from the Pelikan's Perch!) I later got a blue-striped Souveran M400, back when they were around $200 (or so).

Now, many years later, I have a second (better) husband. Although he himself is not a fountain pen fan, he did buy me one of my best pens for our first (dating) anniversary in 2004: the white and tortoise Souveran 400. I've noticed that I am not alone in considering this one of the most gorgeous Pelikans ever produced.

In the past, I had only used Pelikan inks, violet and blue-black and a mixture I made of the two, but recently I somehow came across the Pilot Iroshizuku inks and was smitten. I also found the Pelikan Edelstein inks. And the special pens made to match the Edelstein inks of the year. I also bought both of the highlighter Pelikans, but I've been using green Chiku-rin Iroshizuku ink (instead of the highlighting ink) in the green pen.

So in the past seven months I have been on a bit of a buying spree. Along with sites like the Pelikan's Perch and the Jet Pen review blogs, I often consulted these forums. So I felt I should join your fora and contribute however I can.

Sorry for the length, but I am a wordy woman (it's my job, after all)!

Here is my pod of Pelikans:

Welcome to FPN, the best enablers on the web. My blue striped M800 has been my constant companion since the day I bought it. Weight, balance, and feel are perfect and it is enhanced with a Binder Italifine .9 mm nib.

Enjoy the companionship, knowledge, and opinions here. There are lots of Pelikan lovers at FPN. Some of us also hail from western NY, in my case from about as far west as you can go without being in Pennsylvania.

Welcome to our little corner of the universe from a pen user and fellow academic in San Diego. I, too, am a big fan of Pelikans especially the M600 series and also love Iroshizuku inks!

mamajones,

Welcome to the FPN.

You truly do have a beautiful Flock there!

My first gold nib FP was a Pelikan M400 in a Fine nib. I have since gravitated toward Stub/Italic nibs.

If you look at the Pelikan forum you will see how many people are really Pelikan fans!

Enjoy your time here.

If your out-go is more than your income,

Then your up-keep.

May be your Down-falll!!!

Greetings and a warm welcome from one more Pelikan enthusiast. I'm relatively new here as well and my first Pelikan quickly turned into three.

Retired, twice. Time to do more things, writing being one.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
