Turtles:

The Tortoise binde is arguably the most handsome finish of these wonderful pens, at least in my opinion. In my meager collection I only have a few:

Admittedly, one of these is a green stipe, but I think it looks good in this mini collection. I actually have a hidden agenda: My hope is that this post will inspire you to post pics of your turtles as well. Let's see your gems.

(My apologies for the poor photography.)

Lovely tortoise group photos. Love the tortoise's stripe variant there side by side. More will join the flock I reckon. Thanks for sharing dr codfish.

Here are my tortoises (or whatever the plural of "tortoise" is. I really only use the 800 since the others are a bit small for my taste. But they are as good looking as they come!

There's something about the tortoise that appeals to me more than the other Pelikans. They're elegant yet they have more character than some of the more somber black pens.

Great looking pens. I'm a sucker for the tortoise finish. Can't get enough of them.

PELIKAN - Too many birds in the flock to count. My pen chest has proven to be a most fertile breeding ground.

Just two tortoises for me, the M800 Brown Tortoise and M600 White Tortoise! Such handsome pens   I'm a big fan of the brown tortoise finish!

I was very lucky to score these as they were the last remaining stock of a local seller a few years ago. I think the Brown Tortoise would be the only M800 I'd never sell!

"a local seller"... out here in the desert our local seller is Staples and if you don't want the black Metro of the black VFM you're out of luck.

The M800 Tort would be a never sell for me too. I'm thinking that's why the price on the few that come up is so high. That pen, the sea green, and the Gaudi are the top of my wish list.

Is the M400 white tortoise also limited like the M600 was?

this resource lists it as "series production" which I take to mean a regular line pen

https://www.pelikan-collectibles.com/en/Pelikan/Models/Souveraen-Series/M400-Basis/index.html

and based on listings on eBay it looks like the M400 version is so much easier to come by than the M600...

Ahh, the tortoises... gotta love them!

Some great collections above.

I only have three of them, a 90's M400, the new M400 with a super wet IB nib, and the 2013 edition M800. I was lucky to get one of the last M800 at an "affordable" price at the beginning of last year. I also wanted a M600 white tortoise, but I never found one for a reasonable price and, by now, I basically scratched that one off of my wish list.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
