Paper Mills Who Make Fp-Friendly Papers

Recommended Posts

I'm seeking recommendations for paper mills that make FP-friendly papers, specifically luxurious FP papers.

I'm a stationer working on a subscription service that will require me to produce fresh product each month and my small stable - things like Crane Lettra and GF Smith's Colorplan (though not its thickest sheets) - need some augmentation.

For context, attached is the type of stuff I'm doing. Things like duplexing leather and paper for a knifemaker's gift certificates.

Are you looking for digital, offset or letterpress stock? And what size? Parent? Cut?

Most of us use either a readily available paper or specialty paper with a particularly passionate following. Around here the former is HP #32 Color Choice Laserjet. The latter is Tomoe River, which costs a fortune to import from Japan. Regardless, the size choice is typically Letter or A5.

Perhaps you could get some samples from your supplier or from the mills. I know the folks around here would love to help if you could supply samples. We'll do a lot to encourage more FP friendly products.

Great questions!

I'm mostly interested in parent sheets, though anything down to 12.5x19 would be fine. Mostly letterpress, though not all will be (there will be some laser, foil, emboss, etc).

The key here is luxe stocks. Thickness isn't necessarily the key, as I can duplex anything I need to.

Yeah. Completely out of my experience. Lots of offset and silk screen, no letterpress. For book paper I can wander into an xpedx. I'd have to go back to gathering samples you want to test and distributing small sheets for FPN members to try. You'd get a very practical return with the wide variety of nibs and inks found about here.

Sorry I can't help more.

You can always go over and browse "The Papermill Store" and see the various brands they carry. They have card stock all the way down to onion skin.

To macaddicted: Thanks for the tip! After seeing your post, I ordered a ream of HP #32 Color Choice Laserjet to try out. :-)

Debbie

You're welcome. It's a favorite about here. You'll find it's a very bright white, resistant to show through an bleeding. It's also very heavy.

Wonderful! I may use this to create some of my own sketchbooks/notebooks.

Thanks again,

You might want to look up Stora Enso. They make a range of papers, some cut sheet for office / laser printer use, some for other uses.

Follow the Contacts linky for their representatives in your country.

No relationship, just a happy user of their 4CC paper.

Some years ago, I think I got mine from Officeworks??? Perhaps?? Then it disappeared, then I found a ream of the Stora Enso Superior there, which is almost, but not quite, as good as the 4CC.

It seems to depend on the ink.

Can't seem to find the 4cc now. Let me know if you happen upon any on your travels.

David: Thanks for the tip! I looked through their Contacts' list and sadly, they have no Canadian contact.

It looks like you'll have to either contact Liisa Nyyssönen, or make do with the US contacts

VERY VERY grateful to Macaddicted (I just sent you a PM): thank you so much for the recommendation of HP #32 Color Choice Laserjet. It just arrived today and is EXACTLY what I was looking for (an affordable and Canadian-accessible FP-friendly paper).

THANK YOU!

I continue to be so glad I joined FPN. What an awesome community.

Debbie, you could also pop into a Muji store near you and pick up some of their refill binder paper. In Aus. it is about $4 for a packet of 200 sheets, and is as good as you can get.

You're welcome. Now you need to work on bindery techniques.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
