My State Of The Collection

Hi guys,

Relative newby to the fountain pen world, I'm a student and I've tried to make a few (sensible) fountain pen purchases. I thought I'd share with you guys to get an honest critique of my collection so far. I've just included the better pens in my collection.

Number 1 is my TWSBI Vac Mini

Number 3 is my Mont Blanc 144

Number 4 is my Omas MOMA

A well combined set of pens with different loading systems, maybe you need also a cartridge pen.

My favourite pen would be the Omas MOM.

What type of nib you have on them?

The Mont Blanc, TWSBI and OMAS all have fine nibs. The Lamy 2000 is a medium, I think I would have preferred a fine but the price was good!

You are off to a fine start. Just remember to buy books and food first as pens can get addictive. ;)

They have gotten very addictive! I've always used basic fountain pens as a child as my handwriting was quite messy and fountain pens helped me slow down a bit. The only issue is when I start working I'm only allowed to use black ink! Also only allowed black ink in my exams, unfortunate eh.

I like my Sheaffer Connaisseur with converter. I know, I know, it's supposed to be spelled Connoisseur, but it's spelled Connaisseur on the box.

Baptiste knew how to make a short job long

For love of it. And yet not waste time either.

There are like 50+ black inks so you can still have a little fun even in the limits given you. It is amazing how inconsistent the definition of black is across manufacturers.

Looks great so far. The 2000 and the MB 144 are classic pens. In fact, I have my 144 inked right now and I'm beginning to remember just how much I enjoy mine. They are, in my opinion, underrated pens when compared to their bigger counterparts (the 146 and 149).

Connaisseur is the correct spelling in modern French. Connoisseur is a spelling that sidled into English by way of Old French. I wouldn't say "connoisseur" is wrong, as it is used by English-speakers and has been for some time, but one can hardly say that the French spelling is wrong.

Good start.

A medium shades a bit different than an F....and you are missing a B..... :D

B's are fun.

After you have 5 pens...it's time to think of old German Vintage semi-flex....on the 7th, old German maxi-semi-flex...one of the two in oblique.

Never waste your money on an oblique that is not semi/maxi...unless you are left eye dominant or left handed.

For every two bottles of ink, buy a ream or package of good to better paper. That way you won't have to play catch up.

I think what you say about the 144 is very true. It's diminutive looks hide a rather pleasing overall aesthetic. Take it away from its big brothers and it looks, feels and writes very similar to a very high quality vintage pen.

Excellent start! The 144 has been on my list for a while - just waiting to find the right one at the right price.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
